The Warden has been very direct about her opposition to any gas & oil objects placed about the house. She lets me have whatever I want in my office, but the rest of the house is off limits! Generally I respect her wishes, but she has seemed to soften up a bit over the years, so I thought I'd try sneaking in a piece now and then? Its going to have to be VERY slowly, so as not to get shut down right away, so this is my first attempt at it. We will see how it goes, and get her reaction when she finally spots it! Hopefully she doesn't see it for several days and my argument will be that it can't be too obvious if she hadn't seen it for the last week or so!! Hope I'm not dreaming here??? LOL

Take a picture with a date stamp so you can prove it's been there awhile.

Good luck with that Kevin!! Somehow I'm not so sure I see this ending well for you. grin
But then again, it kinda blends with the other vintage stuff up there.

Tried that same tactic some years back with a gas pump. Nothing was said for about four days and then out of the blue, she says real quiet" You know that can't stay there". I asked why not and her reply was" Nevermind I'll just move it myself" I took about five minutes to relocate to my shop.

Well, this globe is up in the air about 9 feet and she has walked past it several times already without seeing it, so we are on a roll so far. She will have to sit on my side of the breakfast bar, and look up to see it! It does kind of blend in with the white horse behind it, so maybe, just maybe we will get away with this for a week or so? If I do, then I have an argument as to why it should stay! I hope that isn't backward thinking?? LOL

I did the same thing with an 18" neon sign on top of a kitchen cabinet. She noticed it pretty much right away even before I turned it on. I gave her the sales pitch about how great it looks lit up, but she said, "No way." But she didn't insist on it coming down immediately, just "Don't light it up."

A couple weeks later she hosted her regular card party with her girlfriends. I left the house for the evening. When I came home around 10 pm, I could see the neon glow coming out of the kitchen windows as I parked my truck. Turns out she turned on the sign for her friends and they all liked it. Case closed. It stayed. smile

Guys, there are more women that like this stuff than you realize. I have some turn to their husband and say "why don't you do something like this?", when they are touring. Last week I had a group of bicyclists stop by and the women were taking pictures.

The Warden really likes the stuff, she just doesn't think it qualifies as "house decor". We are into day 2 now, and I had forgotten that she occasionally tours "Old Gas" when things are slow at work! Its fairly busy there right now, so maybe it won't happen?
So far its all good. LOL I hope Gene is wrong about the stitches!

I was thinking the same thing. I display gas and oil things in the house and in the cabin. If she can have her little moose statues and moose towels, I can have my junk too, LOL.

FREEDOM oil items wanted.

Guess I'm one of the lucky ones, flight control wants an Eire 158 for her kitchen, I've been dragging my feet because she wants it done as a Coke brand but I better get going because if she ain't happy nobody is happy.

Steve--its on a shelf up high above you as you enter the kitchen. Sitting at the breakfast island, its readily visible if you look up! Human nature doesn't tend to direct our line of sight above where we are moving, unless we are stationary and looking around. She WILL see it eventually, I just want it to be a way into the future, so I can argue that it was in place for a couple weeks and wasn't obtrusive! LOL

I remember a few years back when Old Gas member "oldnfuelish" poste a thread about moving items into the house that he titled "slowly movin it in". Of course he started with a Tokheim 850 and was hoping it could stay in place! She was very tolerant and the last time I was at his house, the pump is still there! Maybe I can get the same results!

I still say take a picture with a date stamp to prove how long you've had it there, when the day arrives she notices it & says you just put it there.

How do you get away with drinking a Pepsi in a Coke kitchen?
I bet she is already on to you and is just devising a payback.
Good Luck.

I swear!!! She has NOT seen it yet, or I would have heard about it!! She has told me many times that she thinks that I know her better than she does! There is no reason for her to look up there YET! Maybe on cleaning day?? LOL

Its the weekend tomorrow, and that may tell a different story, as she has 2 days of being at home.

ITS OVER!!! cry On Friday as she was going out the door, she was giving me a hug, and happened to look up and saw that the enamel coffeepot that was sitting up there, was shoved into the corner, and she made a mental note to check it out when she got home because something wasn't right! shocked

She discovered the globe when she got home that night, but didn't do anything with it until the next morning when I was occupied! It was about noon or a little after when I looked up and saw the globe missing! shocked

Since we were busy with staining the deck, I just let it go until the evening and casually asked where my globe had gone to? She replied "that's a redundant question because you know I don't allow globes in my kitchen and there couldn't possibly have been any in here". I laughed heartily but she just gave me a puzzled look and went about her business?

There hadn't been anyone in the house besides the 2 of us, so I resigned myself to a little payback time and didn't ask about it again until this morning! I even asked politely if I could just have it back, but she acted like she didn't know what I was talking about??

I had already looked in a few key hiding places and it wasn't to be seen, so I thought I was probably in for some long winded payback and might have to beg a little? That's when I opened the doors to the front entryway closet and there it was, calmly sitting on the shelf. I glanced over at the Warden and all she did was give me a big smirk!

I started to plead my case about her inability to even notice it for 5 days and how it should be allowed because it was so unobtrusive, but I got stopped dead in my tracks with a stern and firm "NO"!

I don't think I am done with this effort yet, but I think I might have to take a different tact when I approach the problem again???? What's life if you don't try?? cool

The decor seems to be a farm animal theme - why not a Hancock Globe?
Get one with as big a rooster as they come, show her how nice it is, then you might have a shot--easy peasy! laugh

Just for fun, buy a repop Hancock globe, screw a globe holder to the top of the cabinet then put tamper proof screws to hold the globe in it. It would be worth the money to watch her bust it all up trying to get it down.

Matt Alvarez sold me a nice original Bennett 966 pump last year at Fred's pacific coast show. Anyway we were going to have a few gas pump friends over to our house for a visit and my wife asked me if I had a cool looking pump that would fit in the guest bathroom to surprise the guys! I showed her the Shell Bennett and she said go ahead and let's see how it looks in the bathroom. Almost a year later it still sits there LOL!!!!

Do not give up Kevin,
Rob
