Hi all,
Just curious on how any of you ship a large porcelain sign and keep the shipping reasonable.
I was going to take to UPS store to see how much it would cost to crate and ship but wanted any advice before reaching out.

ups store will charge a ton and will not package it adequately

a 48" sign gets costly to ship because of the dimensions, not because of the weight.

the last time I shipped a 48" sign, I built a frame that was 1" larger than the sign with 2x3s, and then cut a notch in the inside of the 2x3 boards and framed the sign. then put 1" insulation foam board on each side and covered each side with hardboard.

it weighed like 45-lbs when all done. I shipped from IL to CA for like $119 via fedex.

Okay that's a good idea! Where did you buy the box for it?

check into Fed Ex Freight...not ground, but freight. I found them to be the best price in the past. But, the box was damaged along the way. I don't ship many large items, but, in the years of reading items here on Oldgas, you can't over pack too much..i.e. bubble wrap and protection from some guy with a forklift ramming your sign at the speed of light....

Make a 1"x 4" frame for a plywood or masonite crate. Carpet pad two layers around the whole thing. Make sure it is blocked at the edges. Makes for a safer ride.
