Yup, you better be a dang good mechanic to afford farming...

So what does cleaning the wheat entail? Some kind of threshing machine separating wheat from the chaff? Or was that done at harvest?

Interesting use of a dump truck in the middle. Trying to figure out all the machinery and where the other section of red pipe is directing wheat to. The only think I got is that the green tractor is using its PTO to drive the blue grain elevator to move wheat to a silo.

Good question Nicole, you clean the grain so you don't plant weed seeds. When we harvest weeds and everything goes in the combine and it sorts most of it out but not all of it. So the first auger puts the harvested grain in the cleaner that has screens sort out the grain from everything else. Then next auger puts everything the cleaner rejects in the grain kart. The other auger puts it in the truck where we use the blue auger to put the cleaned grain in another bin. We can clean 400 bushels an hour. Then I haul everything that was rejected and sell it at the grain elevator.

So what does the grain elevator do with the rejected wheat and weed seed? Convert it to mash or something for livestock?

I worked on a farm when I started college, but I took care of dairy cows and the crop we mostly grew was alfalfa for hay or corn for silage. My only contribution to that part of the farm, was loading manure on a spreader, and spreading it on the field prior to planting.

Nicole, sorry for the delayed answer. The grain elevator throw out the weed seed (which this time was 65% I think of the load and the 35% which was the grain they just give you a lower price for it since it is a lower grade. They don't pay you for the weed seeds of coarse. A lower grade cause it might be cracked kernels or smaller, that got rejected by the screens in the cleaner. Probably 5-6% gets rejected out of a grain bin. Photos of me taking semi-truck to elevator.
