Thought I would share an interesting story that occurred in my neck of the woods today. I run an occasional ad locally and it is often more "miss" than "hit", in my quest for the items hidden from a time long gone by. But every once in a while luck drops a gem into the world of my collecting and today was a perfect example of good fortune. Early in the week, I received an email from a very nice lady about a half hour away from me. She indicated her husband and she had quite a large ESSO sign that they wished to part ways with. She mentioned that she had no real idea of value but had an idea of where she would like to be if I decided to purchase the sign. So, off my friend and I go today to look at a massive sign and to maybe make a memory of our lasting friendship. Upon arrival, I see this huge ESSO STANDARD DEALER DSP SIGN with remnants of the ring still in place, leaning against the house wall in the back yard. I learn that the sign was inside the garage against the wall covered by blankets for the last 30 years and that finally the wife convinced her husband to move it on. Here, the husband's father was the owner of an ESSO station at the corner of RTE 30 and Main Street in Imperial Pa in the late 1940's and early 1950's and that this was the actual sign that hung there! I made an offer and after a bit of negotiation, we agreed on a price and placed this monster in the back of my truck. As I saw it back there, I could not help but wonder where in the world I could possibly hang it once I made the 30 minute trip back home. Right before I left, the husband and wife came down to see me off and had a bag for me to take. Imagine my surprise to see within the bag, the actual black and white framed photograph of the husbands father pumping gas at the ESSO station, with the very same ESSO sign, which was now in my truck, in the background of the picture! Additionally, he told me that after it had been an ESSO station, he and his brother ran it as a GULF station for quite a bit longer and he wanted me to have the restroom placard key holders from that period of time! So fortunate did I feel I cannot explain. Anyway, I am hoping I can get someone to help me post the pics of my day and more hopeful I can get some help from Oldgas land with some questions from the picture. Can someone please tell me the history of ESSO STANDARD DEALER and can someone help me identify the gas pump in the picture, as well as the type of car? Thanks!

Thanks so much for the input. Can anyone shed some light on the difference between just an ESSO sign and an ESSO with STANDARD DEALER on it? Was this an after merger thing with Standard oil or just a designation for certain dealers that met a level of service standard set by ESSO? Just curious.

I agree with Jim..Standard Oil of New Jersey.. Older Esso signs had DEALER etc. Newer ones c.1960s plain Esso.
Looking for Keystone,Pure,Sinclair,Texaco,Sterling and Gulf...Thanks, Brian
