Morning all! Fred was right on yesterday! The smoke from the western fires hit us yesterday and have created a fairly thick upper level haze! Pretty effective at blocking out the suns rays, to the point that the temps probably won't get near as high as predicted? Not a lot of demands on me today, so I think a little yard work may be in order? I've got some pesky weeds trying to get a foothold, so its time to break out the 2-4-D weed killer! Hope all is well with the rest of you! Have a great day on me!!--KEVIN

Good morning gang!
Clear as a bell here today Kevin, not a cloud in the sky. I have a busy day in the shop today, I am all alone. Matt texted me and said he was staying home sick today. Hopefully I dont get the same crud he has.
Today is my anniversary. I better split, have a good day everybody!

Morning all!
Congratulations Ryan on the anniversary. We have an over cast day and on the cool side, think this winter could be a real rough one. Getting too old for that junk.
Cleaning up some real work this morning then it's clean up the garden shed, it's a mess! If I have any gas left in the tank after that I have some pumps I need to work on, we'll see.
Other than that have a great day and keep pointing in the right direction. Les

Good Morning everyone,
Beautiful morning here starting in the 50s and going up to near 80. I hung up 3 of the 4 foot LED light fixtures in the shop garage. They are really nice. Put out way more light than a fluorescent at less than half the wattage. Working on another corner of the shop today to turn a pile of miscellaneous into some order.
Hope the firefighters in the PNW get some rain and less wind to help them out.
Have a great day out there in Oldgasland!
Spent some time this morning after breakfast down by the dock, soaking up the light breeze.

How was the cost compared to traditional fluorescent fixtures? I have debated going to LEDs in my garage, but seems to be a significant up-front cost to do so.

I just purchased some LED flood lights to install at my cabin in place of the 500 watt Halogen flood lights. They are 100 watt and put out twice the lumens of the halogen lights. They have not arrived yet, hopefully in the next day or so.

I have replaced my cfl bulbs with the LED bulbs, way more money but way more light and the wife is following the electric bill monthly to see if there really is any savings. I also plan to replace the fluorescent lamps as they burn out, again big money switching over.

i'm fairly familiar with general use LED bulbs, when compared to CFLs and whatnot.
But I currently have 4ft long fluorescent fixtures that take T12 flourescent bulbs I believe... so I'm assuming I would have to completely replace the fixtures and everything.
Just curious what Jim was able to find when pricing the 4ft options.

Just curious what Jim was able to find when pricing the 4ft options. The units I got were from Costco. They were on sale at almost half price. Very similar to this current light they now offer: http://www.costco.com/4%E2%80%99-LED-Shop-Light-with-Chain-2-pack.product.100223617.htmlThey are complete fixtures with integral bulbs. You can also get retro-fit LED bulbs to go in traditional T12 4' fixtures. You have to disconnect the ballast and they go in just like a normal T12. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00NO4VFHQ?psc=1The T12 is 40 watts, so that's 80 per fixture plus a few more watts lost in the ballast. The LED is 38 watts total. The fluorescent puts out 65 lumens per watt and the LED puts out around 100. LED lasts 50,000 hours and fluorescent 20,000. Flourescents have mercury content and LED do not. Fluorescent have some cold start, hum and flicker issues while LED does not. It is a long run deal. The initial LED cost is much higher, but the electric savings are significant as well as the longer lifetime of the unit. It will take years to break even, but electric won't be getting cheaper.

Hey Kevin I showed my wife the bit about my being right and she doesn't believe you! Thanks for that laugh. We are still under a smoke advisory. Compounding the problem is new wildfires in BC. However moisture is on the way helping the lads fighting the fires in the Pacific Northwest. And help rain out the particulate matter in the smoke and should help our local air quality problem. Have a great day all. Fred
