Must have been the very early 70's, my mom, my sister and I were late for church (my dad never went) in D.C. It probably was one of the holidays as the church was full. My mom saw a pew near the front that wasn't full, so we hurried down the aisle and my little sister and I go in first and she followed. I was just a kid so I don't remember much of the man I sat next to, but years later my Mom told me how mortified she was that she shoved over Teddy Kennedy and his family. In retrospect I was surprised the secret service did not tackle her.

"Nascar drivers to many to list many we have raced against at local tracks.....".

Loyd, I'll bet that you and I have crossed paths in the past at a race somewhere. I remember all the years we went to the Snowball Derby in Pensacola and the Allison's were always there. Also, a guy from Franklin, TN named Waltrip was usually there in an ugly gold Chevy II. An old man from Gulfport used to take us through the pits and introduce us to all of them. I guess he knew them, he was a legend in his own mind. smile......GB

Maybe so Gary. Legend in his on mind. Seen a lot of them. Maybe I 've been called that as I always was working with someone that had a shoe string budget. Bobby Allison is the nicest guy you will ever meet.
Forgot one encounter. Rode from Hotel to the fairgrounds with Jay Leno,Billy Givens, and Miss Harley Davidson at the 90th ann. of Harley Davidson. They was grand Marshalls leaded the parade through town, and the police showed up to escort them to the fairgrounds which was the blast off point. Well we was standing there trying to figure out how we was getting there as traffic was a mess. Me and my friend just took off with them Like we belong. Sirens blazing lights flashing we rolled in to a sea of Motorcycles at the fairgrounds. Legends in our on minds for sure.

This does not really count, BUT I played high school basketball against Ron Baker numerous times while he was at Scott City and I was at TMP. He is a really nice guy. Other than that, I haven't met famous people!

Love reading all of these. Like many, it's not how big the name is but how memorable the moment was. 6 years old and getting to ride side by side with Evil Knievil has to be about the coolest thing on the planet for any kid. (Canadiandiesel)

When I was 18 I was working at the State Fair that summer. I asked one of the directors who was from the farm area where I was rasied if he could get me tickets to a concert. He came up with two front row seats to Sony and Cher. (Chart toppers at the time). Looking for a date and not being many girls working there, he gets me to ask an office girl. Shy country boy in the city I finally got up the nerve. Not until the show did I learn she was Sony's cousin. Long story short got to spend time after the show with them.

Ex wife went to school with Rick Mears. That netted me time in the garage area with him and his crew during time trials one year.

Have met many 500 Race Car drivers over the years. There is a restarurant in the town of Speedway where they like to eat off season, when they are testing equipment for companies on the track. Companies pay these guys to come in and test stuff so they have someone that knows the track and can give it a proper workout. A.J. Foyt is the most memorable but there have been many others.

Chuck

The only famous people I have met are from the original Dukes of Hazzard cast. James Best (Rosco), Sonny Shorer (Enos), Ben Jones (Cooter), and Rick Hurst (Cletus, he was a real dud). Rosco was from my home county, and met him and the the Hazzard County law there.

My grandfather bought Billy Carter (Jimmy Carters beer brewing brother) a beer once. It was at a airport in Indiana. He naturally offered to buy him a Billy Beer. Billy responded with "Give me a Pabst, 'cause my beer tastes like s**t."

Always found that story funny.

My parents owned a hotel, and we got to meet many singers over the years. Whenever the state fair came to town, and they were playing the fair, they usually stayed with us. Not huge names necessarily, but Robert Palmer, Conway Twitty, Brenda Lee... Coolest person was Waylon Jennings, my father ended up talking to him for two or three hours. They were both into Tom Mix and other other old school cowboys. Also met many of the Arizona Cardinal players when they stayed at the hotel for training camp.

Bob's father was a plasterer by day and a guitar player by night. Among other musicians, Roy Clark (before he got real famous) used to jam with Bob's dad, but Bob's mother didn't like him around because he cussed all the time. Bob also shook hands and talked with Betty Ford when he was a temp with Reading is Fundamental that she sponsored back in the day.

When he worked for a big tropical plant company, he was cleaning old leaves out of big hanging planters in the ceiling filled with Boston Ferns at the Shoreham Hotel in D.C. A voice called out below "I didn't order salad with my soup" and Bob thought oh oh...

It was Bill Cosby during his I Spy days. Bill invited Bob to join him for lunch and they talked about plants and asked Bob where he went to college and shared that his wife also went to UMD.

Oh and he went to school with Reginald Rucker, and I just remembered Bob and I together went to Chris Hanburger's house to advise him on having a Christmas Tree farm to get agricultural taxes on his property...

I met Richie Havens at the urinals in the men's room of a bar he was playing at. Never got a chance to shake his hand. Met Chrissy Hynde and the rest of the Pretenders at a hotel bar. "The Most Interesting Man In The World" John Goldsmith lives the next town over and Ive met him and run into him all the time as well as other celebs in VT. Paul McCartney was skiing here a couple weeks ago. A bunch of locals met him, but not me unfortunately.
