I am currently selling a kit that includes everything that you need to motorize your Gas Pump Computer! This kit contains all new parts, including a brand new gear reduction drive motor from Grainger.
The mounting plate is the key to this setup, because it mounts directly to the bottom of the computer, and requires no fabrication or drilling to mount the entire apparatus. It can only attach to the computer in ONE POSITION, leaving the installation virtually foolproof! The mounting plate was designed by an Old Gas member, and I did the configuration for the sizing on all of the spacers and connectors.
The beauty of this kit is the ease of installation, and the fact that there is nothing needed in the way of mounting fabrication, or driveshaft configuration! The only restriction is that the bottom area of the veeder root computer must be open and accessible for the attachment of the mounting plate. Some gas pumps use a mounting plate that the computer sits on, and this type of pump could not utilize this kit.
I am currently working on a demonstration video that I will put on you tube, that will show the mounting procedure and actual workings of this kit. I expect to finish it sometime within the month? I also have several test units out there on customers pumps with absolutely no problems to date. I built a test stand demonstration model that has over 1000 gallons of test time on it, and again, NO PROBLEMS!
The first picture shows the unique mounting plate and the spacers and hardware used to mount it.
The second picture shows the gear reduction motor from Grainger and the couplers used to attach it to the veeder root computer.
The third picture shows all of the different components of the complete kit.
The last picture shows the complete kit mounted to the bottom of the veeder root computer on my demonstration test stand.
The motor is a gear reduction unit that is sold by Grainger, and sells for nearly $90 plus shipping. The entire kit sells for $150 plus shipping. I currently have several kits on hand and can deliver to the "Its A Gas" show for free! Please feel free to contact me with any questions on this new product!
Thanks---KEVIN

how is the motor controlled?... a switch within the pump nozzle? or how have you done it thus far?

Looks like it has the ability to wire up anyway you want it to. I'd like to put that on my pump when I get restored this year.

Good question Bryce--
I have left the wiring up to the individual pump owner, because there are so many different ways to do it!
On my own pumps, I use a switch activated when I raise the nozzle rest. I have attached connecting rods to the nozzle rest, that trip a switch mounted within the pump.
The idea of a switch within the nozzle is very easy to do also, but I've always been afraid of the electricity contacting the metal nozzle somehow?

It was actually Clinton Newell that designed and built the mounting plate. He cuts them out with a laser machine, and then I clean them up a little and paint them.
It was a terrific idea and makes mounting a motor so simple!

Would this be adaptable to the clockface mechanism in a Wayne 866?

No, the adapter plate would not bolt up to the mechanism. I'm sure the drive motor could be used to power a clockface mechanism, but you would have to devise your own mounting setup.

I believe so, as long as there is continued interest, I will keep a few kits on hand.
Our idea was to provide a low cost, all inclusive kit, that is very easy to install. We aren't making much on this, but since we had developed the kit for our own use, we decided to offer it to the membership and see how much interest there is?

Fun stuff Kevin!! Nice simple design. Love the little u-joint coupler.
What's the fan all about? Just came with the motor?

FWIW, here are a couple other places, like Grainger, where you can find all kinds of componentry.

Can only be considered continuous duty when used with the fan

K W That is a really thought out design. Bottom plate simple for mounting with motor to computer. I will need one or two kits just in case I deside to do another one. I do think I have a few more gallon Bell kits.

This kit has gone over very well and I have 2 kits left until I get more mounting plates made. Hopefully, they are on their way relatively soon.

It looks like a great kit. I don't think it would be a problem in a pump with a shelf mount though. Like a Wayne 505. Just put the computer on the shelf and run the bolts through. Someone may need to cut a larger hole for the drive coupler though.

I'm going to assume that this setup wouldn't work on offset drive computer? Like the ones used in a Wayne 80. I was just wondering about it.

The offset drive portion can be removed and then install Kevin`s kit.

Yes, the offset has to be removed and the gear taken off the bottom of the Veeder Root.
On those pumps where the bottom of the variator is obstructed, this kit won't work in the manner it was designed. BUT--I was recently sent some photos from another old gasser that used the mounting plate with longer spacers and a different coupler to make it all work!

That design setup is what we will be working on next!

I was sold out of the mounting plates, but I just got another batch I and can fill any orders again. I plan on having my display stand at Peotone, for demonstration purposes. If anyone wishes a kit to be delivered to Peotone, please let me know ahead of time, so I can be sure to bring enough along.

Here is a photo of my display stand, and it pretty well shows how the whole assembly mounts to your veeder root. I will have this display unit at Peotone with me to demonstrate just how the unit works. I will also have several kits packaged and ready for installation, with me. If you are interested or have any questions, please give me a call at any time. 701-739-6133
Kits sell for $150 plus $12.65 shipping, but are delivered to Peotone for free.

The kit from Kevin was amazing. Everything fit perfectly!!! Not like other kits you buy nowadays for cars etc. - where you need to start elongating holes, run to town for addition hardware etc. I had it installed and running in 20 minutes. Hooked to my freshly rebuilt computer by JOE, is just ran like a new watch. Thanks for making such a complete kit with excellent directions and pictures available to the group. Jim

Thanks for the praise Jim! We wanted the kit to be all inclusive and easy to install. Seems like we hit the mark ok , as there have been no complaints and a lot of praise for the ease of installation!
I have kits in stock and ready to go if anyone needs one!

Iowa Gas is coming up fast, and I can bring some of these kits along to save postage! If you're restoring a pump, it isn't complete without one of these kits installed!

Kevin,
What do you use to mate the motor shaft with the computer shaft? Spyder? What if the shaft diameters are different diameters?

Here is picture of what I had to do for the Wayne MS 80s that we have done. Side mount with the inter-connector that goes in between from again as you suggested the place you get your parts.

Yes the 2 shafts are different sizes, but I used spyder type couplers with different bores in them. You can't mix it up that way either, because the coupler that mounts to the bottom of the VR needs to be recessed a little to keep from interfering with the 3 little aluminum bumps on the bottom of the VR.

Kevin,
I get my spyders and motors from McMaster-Carr and they work great. I also have 12 volt micro-switches in the nozzle and side arming lever that actuate a relay to kick on the computer motor when you squeeze the nozzle to "put the gas in your tank". See my old youtube video below.

There's no worry about getting an electrical jolt with only 12 volts running to the nozzle.
