im not sure what happened to the top. but the building is well-known by anyone in this area. its the only flat-iron style of building in central Illinois... and has stood the test of time so far in the downtown area.
lots of articles online if you search. 100 years ago, it featured a 36-room hotel over a Anheuser Busch saloon. Now there’s soon to be six apartments over a coffee shop and cleaners business.

Awesome then and now Bryce!! I took a quick second to try and find that yesterday when you first posted that pic. But it took me to the Mexican border. So I called it quits. Again, great couple of pics!!!

I know in my town, in the late 1950's and 1960's, "modernizing" the look of these old buildings became the thing to do. Most all of the buildings in downtown Hillsdale were stripped of their beautiful detailed fancy woodwork and iron work, the building I live in was a beauty before it was modernized. Ugly aluminum facades were put over the brick after the gingerbreading was removed. Now they are trying to rebuild these original looks, which is a plus for our historic district.
Great building there at any rate, thanks for the "then and now". Darin

Very cool picture! Our downtown Hays is also remodeling all the old buildings. It is also a plus since they are keeping them up and going!
