They say that every dog has his day and I guess today was mine! LOL I have missed a few Cities Service cans on ebay lately and was really kicking myself for missing a really nice NOS Hypoid can that would have been an upgrade for me, but I did manage to win a pretty nice paper label "Furniture Polish" can. I don't usually mess with paper label cans because of the durability of the label and the ease that they are forged! This one was nice and I didn't have it, so I decided to take a chance. If it was as good as it looked, it would be OK! Heres a link to the auction-- Cities Polish Can Well it arrived today and was packed in a pretty flimsy box, but it was insulated ok, and there didn't appear to be any damage, but I could see that it had leaked in the plastic bag it was in and the label was totally SOAKED! Now I was mad because I wanted the can but the label was damaged and didn't have the bright, vivid coloration like it had in the ebay photos! I carefully wiped it off, and noticed some lettering underneath the label because it was soaked up so bad that you could actually see right thru it! My curiosity was instantly piqued and I got pretty excited! What if this was a repurposed can that Cities Service had originally intended for another product, but had used as a fill in for a minor product instead of having a run of new cans made?? If you look at the photos close, you can see the Cities Service lettering underneath. I took some pictures as I received it and then started to investigate the label. Since it was soaked up so bad, it was easy to lift it a little and look at the can color beneath. IT WAS WHITE! That meant it was probably a very early repurposed Cities Service can and not some cheap forgery! Now I was really excited and had to decide if I was going to remove the label or not? Since the label was so severely damaged, I decided to proceed, and it was simple to remove, because it was soaked up with furniture polish so bad! I think I laughed for joy for the next 15 minutes! I couldn't believe how well preserved the can was from the protection of the paper label and probably being stored in an inside environment all its life. I have never seen this can before, and while I don't doubt that there are others out there, this is my first and truly a prime example. My little $45 investment just grew many times over! LOL I guess today was my day! If the can hadn't leaked, I would probably have never known what was underneath! I'm sure the previous owner didn't! I think I'll go into town and buy a lottery ticket! LOL I took so many pictures, it will take 2 posts to load them all!

Yes, it had furniture polish in the can and he had drained it but there was enough residue to leak out and soak the label up real well.

there's even more to this story than you know Kevin... I was watching that can, and was planning to bid. I missed the end of the auction, and forgot to set my snipe. darnit! you would have probably bid higher than me anyways... but you missed the auction I won the other week, and I missed this auction you won - and I think we both ended pretty happy because of it! maybe we need to start coordinating our bidding, lol

A great find, Kevin!... I hope you are drying out the paper label on a couple of layers of paper towels to wick out the furniture polish. And that once the label dries... It regains the look that drew you to it in the first place...
IMO, it would/will be a great save; to be able to save both the original tin, and the paper label that protected it all these years....
I'm glad that an Oldgas Collector and you in particular; are the "new Owner" of this great little tin...

Great story!! And great luck is right!! What would this can have been for before it's repurpose to a furniture polish can? It doesn't really say much on it.

this is a similar story as Dan finding the gargoyle Handi-oiler under the paper label I was just thinking the same thing. Funny to see two similar postings in such a short period of time.

Great story!! And great luck is right!! What would this can have been for before it's repurpose to a furniture polish can? It doesn't really say much on it. Steve, it looks to me like one of those "general purpose" cans that they stamped and labeled it with whatever they chose to fill it with. I say that because of the blank rectangle at the top of the can. I have seen other companies use this same technique to multi purpose certain cans.

Kevin to paraphrase golfer Jerry Barber who said " the more I practice the luckier I get". The more you look the luckier you get. Including getting, what was it, a sign at your wife's quilting club meeting.

I really like these basic white Cities cans, like the oiler you posted in the oiler thread. They come across as somewhat plain, but they just look clean and cool to me!! Love 'em!

...so, what happens to the paper label? Both this, and the Gargoyle thread, seemed to give short shrift to the labels, which I would argue are rarer than the cans themselves...I think I'd be hard-pressed to cut an original label off of a can...if I could separate the label where it was glued, I might remove it...

Mark-- The label was overlapped and glued and the furniture polish had loosened the glue to the point of simply lifting the edge with my fingernail and it came right apart! I currently have it pressed between 2 paper shop towels and between the pages of "One Hundred Years of Gas Stations". Nice heavy book--LOL That should flatten it out and soak all the furniture polish out of it! Hopefully!
