So there is an item in an auction tomorrow but I am going to be away from a computer. How does this pre bidding work?
If I just put in my top number now, will it just automatically keep bidding for me like ebay does until someone passes me?
If it's an issue, I'll just let it go. There will always be another one!
Any help is appreciated!!

Yes, you may enter a maximum bid amount. The system will bid up to that amount for you automatically and then stop if another bidder exceeds your maximum. Remember the internet bidding premium, tax, and shipping are on top of that maximum amount you specify.

I bid on Proxibid ONCE. I entered my top bid and when I checked back, that amount was the winning bid.
After not receiving an email confirmation, I called the auctioneer. I was told I was NOT the winner. The auctioneer awarded it to someone who was physically there. Part of the registration was to submit my credit card info which I had done. No, I was not maxed out on the card guys!! lol
I was very unhappy and voiced my great displeasure.
Had the winning bid been even 1 dollar more than mine, no problem. But......the same amount!!!
That is what comes out of the western end of an east facing horse!

Dave I have been the guy in the audience where that very thing happened. Ties were awarded to the "bums on the seat" as the auctioneer called us!

This is the policy at most auctions. Bidders in attendance are awarded the winning bid when a tie exists between high bidder and the absentee bidder.

Sounds like it futile, but I'll throw a number at it and see what comes of it. Seems though unless you pre bid some stupid high number your not going to win. And my fear with that would be that somehow it would just so happen that my stupid high number was in fact the high bid. Right at that number. When in reality the highest next bid was quite a bit under it. Who knows.

I for one, well understand your concern Steve.
The auction house would know your highest bid in all likelihood and that WOULD be your bid!
Probably just their "policy"! lol

Every auction house I have been to does that. Just two weeks ago I was at a Langley auction house and the auctioneer took my bid and said it was the same as a absentee bidder but because I was there my bid takes priority.

I have that same fear with what I feel are dishonest auction houses. When I cannot make it in person I try to have friends bid. The auction house I attend in Ferndale has someone other then the auctioneer do the bidding from the back of the room. I trust them.

Yes, proxibid will bid for you competitively by proxy. That's not a problem. The issues arise when the auction house reserves the right to view the amount of internet bids prior to the auction. That in itself isn't necessarily bad but it leaves the door wide open for unethical conduct by the auction house. Read the terms and conditions at any auction, live or internet. You might be surprised. Some auctioneers reserve the right to bid on their seller's behalf! Many auctioneers will defend the practice by saying they're protecting their sellers or they do it to save time, but sometimes doing so artificially affects the selling price or perception of what an item is really worth.
Many auctioneers will elect to sell an item to someone in attendance rather than an internet or absentee bidder. That's really not a bad policy.
Some auction buyers believe auctioneers are doing things that aren't fair to the buyers but don't realize that auctioneer's legal responsibility is to their sellers.

So let me ask. If you are in attendance at an auction and bidding on an item with the only other bidder not present (online, absentee, other), and the other persons bid is at say $2700, can you just match the bid and win the item as long as it isn't raised?
