I just received 3 cans from an eBay auction, 2 have been relidded. The description claimed original, I reviewed the photos, and it is easy to see new lids. I'm happy with my purchase, inexpensive !! But now I'm wondering how much does this effect the value?? Is a relidded Mohawk or Husky worth that much less than a 100% original? I'm new to oil can collecting, and really enjoy it, but nobody wants to overpay ! Is a relidded more desirable than an original with no lid, or no bottom ?

I will take a relid to no lid anyway of the week.
I would rather have Nos but relid if done right and the can has no teeth marks is always fine or the same as original in my book. I do not like the relids that are too shiney though but still better than a gaping hole.

Carl-- I'm not an avid can collector, but I recently spent a bunch in order to aquire a Cities Service AERO can, and if it had been without the lid, I wouldn't have paid quite so much. If it had been relidded, it would have been better, but I do believe that an all original can will command a better price than the others. That original lid just seems to validate the can that much more.

...the can without the lid is more original than the same can, relidded...IMO, relidding affects the value adversely...

Looking for better Gulf items: signs, globes, cans and paper - especially porcelain Gulf flanges, and Gulf A-38 & A-62 ad glass...

I would rather have a can with no lid, than a brand new looking lid that's new. I believe it affects the value on very rare oil cans. Not so much on the common ones.

I agree. I have some seldom seen cans with no lid and I prefer to leave them as is. My thoughts are that a shiny new lid could put an expensive can in question.

No way to get this kind of detailed stamping done for a current relid.
On one like this I would rather have a shredded original than a relid but on common tops and bottoms I would go for a relid.
Check with member Tee Tee for relids.

Here are three very hard to find cans in good condition. All three have new lids. I would have paid less for them with no tops but the same if it had the original.

Those are sweet cans!! Even though they're relidded, the lids are are correct for the era, vs. Just indescript flat shiny lids. Thanks for all the input!!!
