Just picked this sign up today at an antique store. It is 14.5"x8" Sky Chief supercharged with Petrox sign. It looks like it would have been used on a visible pump by the size. Does anyone know anything about these, like rarity, value, what they would have been used on? Thanks in advance.

Unless it's a curved plate, I doubt that it was intended to be used on a visible pump, although anything's possible. The Texas Company started using the "Petrox" proprietary additive package in the '50's, and that's when the "Super-Charged With Petrox" phrase was added to SKY CHIEF plates. As to value - it's like everything else: it's not what it's "worth", it's what you can get. Keep any eye out for similar plates on eBay.

It is a flat sign and is dated 3-3-58. One person told me they were for any 50's pump and are not that rare. However I have been looking at ebay for 18 months or so and have yet to see one like it. If anyone has one like this let me know, I might like to get another one. Might be interested in a fire chief like this as well if they were made in this size.

[Hi, I have the sky chief sign(8"x14") you are talking about. I bought it on ebay last fall. I paid $230.00 for it . The sign is a condition 8-8 1/2. It is also list in the book---A Tour with Texaco by Rick Pease pg.37. Hope this helps, Daniel
