The US Patent Office has a searchable database of patents granted since 1790, which I assume is when patents started being granted.

Hi oldgaspumpguy,

The Patent Office also has a page that simply has a table where you can look up a patent number and it will show what year it was. The table goes back to 1836 and patent number 0000001. Prior to the start of the current numbering system at that time, 9,957 patents had been issued. Remember that the patent date doesn't always mean that it is the actual year of manufacture of the item.

You might want to just print that page to keep for future reference.
