The parent company, of course, was originally Standard Oil Company of New Jersey. The story which I've always understood was that Esso, Humble, Enco, (maybe some others), were operating subsidiaries. They wanted to consolidate everything under one brand name and wanted that brand name to be something totally unique. Somehow, they coined the word "Exxon" - which is actually a meaningless word (i.e., not an acronym nor an abbreviation).

Can you tell me why Esso Changed its name to Enco then changed its name to Exxon?
