I dont have either of those books.....any good? I havent even seen them yet. I am still using the encyclopedias put out by Ed Love years ago. I have the master list of oil cans but its kinda hard to use and probably way outdated...plus I like pictures of the cans...I am excited to recieve Fred stokes Book when its done. That will be way cool.

HUBBA, BOTH BOOKS ARE PRETTY INFORMATIVE AND HAVE LOADS OF PICTURES AND PRICES ON EACH. EACH HAS AN A to Z TYPE FORMAT.
THE FIRST BOOK HAS ALL THE BIG NAME BRANDS MOSTLY C.2001, THE SECOND HAS SOME SMALL NAME BRANDS MIXED IN WITH BIG C.2003.
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND BOTH.

Thanks Doc, appreciate the info. I know of a gentleman that has some composite cans that he is wanting to sell and didn't have an idea of what they are worth. Do the composite cans have much value?

depends..alot of composites are only worth a couple of bucks...unless of course they have a nice picture or neat graphics on them...then they are worth alot more. In my opinion the metal quarts are still the most desirable ...the older the better..the more graphic the better and as always..condition plays a big part of the asking price.

I THINK COMPOSITE CANS HAVE A LONG WAY TO GO IN THE VALUE DEPT. UNLESS OF COURSE LIKE HUBBA SAYS IT HAS UNUSUAL GRAPHICS AND/OR WAS FROM A SMALLER NON-NATIONAL BIG NAME COMPANY. THESE COMPOSITE CANS ARE INDEED A CHEAPER WAY TO FILL A SHALF IN A COLLECTION UNTIL SOMETHING OF BETTER VALUE COMES ALONG. I HAVE SEVERAL COMP QTS IN MY OWN COLLECTION AND THEY DISPLAY GREAT. I AM SEEKING THERAPY FOR THIS! LOL!!! HAPPY COLLECTING TO ALL IN 2004!!!

we did an opinion poll on the first of the miller/sonewald books here on oldgas not that long ago. it seems to most that the prices quoted seemed rather high... thats probably if you don't own the can... HA....

I have both books and in my opinion many of the cans are priced 50 to 60 percent higher than actual value. This is just my opinion and based on the cans I am familiar with. They are however good books, just base your values according to your own thoughts on the values listed.

Thanks guys. Great feedback!!! I haven't had a chance to look at the cans yet to verify condition, company, and graphics.

You also might try the website oilcanbook.com. That used to be a site for a book on oil cans by Tom Allen in Kansas.

You guys are one jump ahead of me. On Saturday, January 17, I am taking delivery of my first order of the book American Oil Cans, Identification & Price Guide by Tom & Susan Allen. I will be offering them for sale through this Web site. Tom & Susan have a huge amount of work in this book. The images are the sharpest and best you will ever find. The technical stuff about dating cans with seams and embossed lid codes is very informative. Values and notes on each can.
