Found a surprise while sanding a gas pump doors white paint off. Will be more careful next time and try to save the original look. Looks to be 3 layers of Shell.

Nice. I have run into Shell pumps like that also. I can see the original red clam decal. The red one may have been Super Shell. When Shell brought back Super Shell around 1957 the pumps were white.

This pump was yellow, then red. On top of the Shell decal was white. The pump doors also have evidence of having two different sized signs mounted on the doors. Here is a before picture.

The four holes at the upper part of the door that are angled were for a plastic Super Shell siign and the smaller set of square holes were for a plastic 3D clam shell sign with gold backround.

WOW. Then this pump has been branded Shell at least 3 times. Maybe 4 if I find a 3rd decal as I think it might have.

Try washing the paint off with lacquer thinner and #0000 steel wool. It'll cut like 2500 grit sandpaper. I've washed paint off oil cans this way.

Whats really crazy is if you sandblast over decals like this one sometimes the image is ingrained in the steel and creates a "ghost image" of the decals. I wish I would have taken photos of them when I worked at a sandblaster.
