I have a gas pump nozzel that was given me by the person for whom I got my 96C2 Gilbarco gas pump from.

He thinks it is the original one that came off of it but not sure.

Here are the features:

All brass;

Solid nozzel;

Has the following information:

PL. 980;
McDonald;
Dubuque;
1B;
Pat. No. 2218641

Can anyone key this one out?

Thanks.

Pluck

Nozzle were the most changed out item on all wet hose pumps, so having the original is highly unlikely.
Look at Jack Sim's web site, G&B Nozzles;
http://petrolianacollectibles.com/g-b%20nozzles.htm
Most pump companies contracted w/ nozzle manufactures to supply nozzles w/ the pump company name on them.

When I was a Shell dealer back in the early 70s, I would have about three rebuilt nozzles on the shelf. When a nozzle would fail, I would grab one of the rebuild\t ones and put it on the hose. The one I took off would go back in the box.
About once a month the rebuilder would come by, replace the broken nozzle with another rebuilt one and charge me.
We didn't care whose name was on the nozzle, if it was brass or aluminum, we just wanted to pump gas. This is why you sometimes find a Bennett pump with a nozzle that has Wayne on it.

As DB said, very slim chance any pump will have the original nozzle on it.

The Patent No. 2218641 is from 1940 if that means anything.

Same era as the pump...so I am happy.

Tried to get more specific items on it but could not find.

What I want are the "specifics" about the nozzel with the provided data. Anyone?

Your Patent # might be for a Fastener or a seal inside the nozzle & not for the design of nozzle body.
Patent dates tell ya it wasn't made before that date. Although most manufactures were making the item Before the Patent was issued w/o a Patent #.
Your nozzle could have been made last year w/ that Patented item used in the making.
Most pump companies had ceased making the pump by the time the Patent was issued. Some will have on ID tag Patent Applied For.
Every item in a pump has a Patent or one was Applied For. Companies Applied For Patents to keep other companies from copying the outer Housing Design.

DB suggested you go to this page of my website. If you had you would see a picture of your nozzle, the 980. It was made from 1940 through the early 1960s. It is one of the most common brass nozzles made.

No doubt it is a replacement as all Gilbarco pumps came with a nozzle that had the word "Gilbarco" in script, on body of the nozzle.

Well Dick you should take the time to look up the number and check it out instead of guessing!

http://www.google.com/patents/US2218641?dq=patent:2218641&hl=en&sa=X&ei=hUMKUqm_OaHY2wWuxoGYDw&ved=0CD8Q6AEwAQ

And for sure...It is the design of the nozzel body...100%.

By the way...the design of the nozzel I have is exactly that as the Patent information tells us.

I doubt very likely it was made last year!

Again, data stamped into the nozzel:

1 D
Pat. No 2218641
Dubuque
PL 980
McDonald

On the Pat information:
No. 2218641
Filed July 19, 1939
Issued October 22, 1940
Chris Groen, Oak Park, Ill
assignor to A. Y. McDonald Mfg. Co
Dubuque, Iowa

So who knows...But as you say Jack...Probably a replacement somewhere along the line.

Interesting website! BUT COULD NOT FIND THE 980??? Please point the right way!

Thanks for the education Dick and Jack...learning something everyday in this new venture!
