There are just "some things" in this hobby that you KNOW, you'll never get a chance to own! If a beat up one comes along, it just makes you want to grab it up anyway! Last fall this globe came up for auction on ebay, and after a lot of discussion with Blacktee from this site, I decided to go ahead and buy it if I could! I put a fairly large sniper bid in at the end and wound up getting the globe for $600+. I don't remember the exact figure? A really good one would be in the 20K+ range, so a few hundred for a wounded example was pretty cheap, except that a broken globe isn't worth a whole lot! Well, in this case I had to make an exception because I felt that I would probably never even get to see one, much less own one! Now came the hard part---getting it back to North Dakota in one piece! The seller was great to work with as he was willing to hold it for as long as it took to get picked up. I called a few east coasters without much luck and finally tried Joey Whitesides. Joey was willing to pick it up (in Virginia) the next time he was in that area and then he would try and get it to me. He was able to secure it on his way to Carlisle and had it in his possession with intentions of bringing it to Iowa Gas, as long as he was able to make the trip! Joey finally let me know that he was coming and would have the globe aboard. He indicated that it was a very KOOL piece and thought I had done well. Just before IG, I got a call from Joey and he was wondering about my location, as he had a Canadian customer that wanted to buy a 6 foot GULF sign, but needed a pickup point close to Canada. He was in luck, as I'm only 100 miles from the border and I would have my big trailer along and could haul the sign for him! This was the OLD GAS transportation system at work, and it worked perfectly for both of us! Joey took great care of my globe for a couple months and was able to get it to me in the same shape as I bought it! Thank you ever so much JOEY! Sometime this winter I will post another picture of it when I get it cleaned up and patched up! It has been put together with silicone and my intentions are to carefully take it apart and clean up the pieces, and then reassemble it using the high grade epoxy that I have used to repair other globe bases! Gonna be a fun project for one of those long winter weeks! Look for more pictures this winter!!

Goes on top of a pump; you can see a picture of one in it's natural state under the Great Old Pics thread...posted by Randy "Advertologist" on July 31st. Kevin great globe look forward to its re-birth this winter!

I believe when first used they were concerned about an explosion with the light came on for the globe, They were afraid gas fumes would fill the globe. That's the reason for the vent.

Early light bulbs put out more heat than they do today, was to vent the heat.
