Through the years I've traveled many a miles like us all and seen some very cool things. We all feel we have worked hard to recover these greeat pieces of our history. Well yesterday I got to do something that had a smile on my face from ear to ear:
A few weeks back I met an older gentlemen to buy some assorted smalls from him. We got to talking about my collection and how old signs have taken off lately. Well after about 15 minutes of shooting the breeze he tells me he purchased his home from an old veedol dealer in the area. Then to my suprise he tells me he has a wonderful gas station sign in his basement thats been there since the home was built in the 40's. With a bit of excitement I asked if he'd consider selling it...he chuckled and said "Let me show it to you first...then you tell me" Here is what I found....

Apparently the original owner was a Veedol station owner. When he built the addition to his home he used some of these as forms for the concrete! My heart sank initially then I had a VERY optimistic idea. So I asked if he'd invite me back in some time and give me the chance to try and carefully remove the sign from his wall/floor. Well understandable he had some reservations as the sign was also going into his floor and he wasnt going to let me mess with anything for anything less than 100.00. So we shook on it that no matter what the sign looked like under there I'd pay 100 for the chance. Well I documented the entire process for you all. I had to share. I'm still smiling.

Remarkably the final result was WAY beyond my wildest expectations! This sign is super flat and doesnt have a scratch on her. I've only cleaned one side but the other looks clean as well. With a little fine tuning I removed those lines you see on top since as well. Something I'll be able to look at forever and have a crazy story to tell. Thanks and huge props to my brother in law for the awesome work with the air chisel.

You can still see the concrete in all the grommet holes...that might be a little tougher to remove. All 4 grommets are intact too so I might just leave that alone until I get brave.

Wonderful story Eric! Thanks for sharing! Don't ever sell that sign, or you won't have the conversation piece to talk about! LOL

Great story, and nice work on the removal and clean up! I'd leave the cement in grommets to back up your superb story to those who see it and say "no way!"

Very cool. Is it possible there are other signs in there? I would think he kept using more signs to form the concrete.
