Bought this the first week in March. Took this long to get it home. Can't wait to tear into it, but will have to wait till next week. Was found 30 years ago in the desert in what is now a portion of Mesa AZ. Sheet metal has two little dents and no rust. Larry
Update: Wife daughter and grandkids went to the Natural History Museum so,,,, tore into it. Now if I can figure out how to remove hose reels. Another day...

Got the hose reels out and cleaned up. Thanks to a phone call from Gaspumpfrank. Never talked to him before but he called and walked me through how to get them out. Thanks Frank
Edited: Thought I would add the 'how to' for getting the reels out. On the top drum (and its actually a brake drum with shoes) you can see in the pic a 'tab'. There is a screw that goes through the skins into this tab. Once its removed, simply turn the drum clockwise and it will lower until you can tip the reel out!

A few more parts cleaned up. Larger parts/skins will have to go out to a sand blaster. Need to find someone that will chrome plate pot metal. Might give the guy in Omaha a call.

Since you are in Colorado, there is a place in Yuma called Quality Plating that does pot metal. They did some parts for me and they did a really good job. They were pretty fast and were pretty reasonably priced.

Hope ya' all are not bored with this. Got My hoses made locally and got them this A.M.. Each reel has a hose inside itself plus whatever you put on the reels. Also need hose to take air into the meter, then calibrated air down to the hose reel. Not to mention a line that supplies water to that reel. Not a big deal. The problem was fitting the reels back in the housing. Fought that way too long... in and out, in and out.
""Islander tip if you restore one: You have to run the reel up the worm gear one full turn before putting the reels back in, or you will drive yourself crazy as to why they won't fit without hitting the stop.""
A couple pics along the way.
Car show tomorrow. Will wrap this up on Sunday

Sitting' at a car show in the shade! You are right about the hard work Dave. Had those reels in and out a minimum of ten times yesterday. Now I know how to do it.

The final bits of work are fighting me. Thought I would show the restored tags. One on the head the other on the islander itself. I always try to restore tags.

Tell us about restoring the tags! I'm always scared to try for fear of ruining what I do have! I will try to explain the I.D. Tag restore process. Pretty simple. The tag you start with has to be perfectly straight. Any dents or bends you try to correct will show. I.D. tags have what I will call 'relief'---raised letters and numbers. A good candidate for restoring, the relief can be felt with your fingers. The Tokheim 39 and 300 tags are poor. Some tags are better than others. You can completely strip the tag if it has lots of paint from numerous paint jobs. But a good as found pump tag can generally just be sanded down on a very flat surface until the raised letters and numbers are shiny clean. I don't worry about the old black paint in the back ground.I then spray with gloss black from a rattle can. Let it dry very well. Then, again on a very smooth surface, wet sand it down with 320 or what ever you have thats not too rough. Go slow and keep looking at it. When the high spots are shiny, you're done. Don't worry, the back ground black with not look great. Then I shoot it with whatever I have in clear. That will bring the back ground back to a nice looking finish. They are not perfect and that adds to your project I believe. Good Luck Larry
