I completed the “rustoration” project this week. It’s a Tokheim 39 tall pump with an original Frontier decal on one side only. I suspect this is because it was against a building or something. The paint has a lot more wear on the side the decal is on. Also there are drilled holes in the doors indicating it probably started its life as something other than a Frontier pump.

The first thing I had to do was get the lights working. The globe socket was broken and the switch was frozen solid. Also the pad for the switch was missing/broken. This is where being a machinist is helpful. With that fixed I could move on to the fun stuff.

Following the advice of a fellow oldgaser I cleaned the panels with water. Allowed them to dry completely and then scuffed with a Scotch Brite pad. Here is the part I wasn’t sure about. It was suggested to me that I use Satin Poyurethane. After trying it on a test piece I loved the results! Too often these rustorations look too shiny. The satin gave it just enough gloss to look good and bring out the color without making the rusty bits look shinier than they should.

I ordered the reset handle, hose, face glass, and ad glass from Gas Pump Heaven online. The order arrived in just a few days. Thanks GPH! And I was able to buy some door hinges from the same oldgasser who gave me the advice on the finish to use. Thank you Mark Smith!

Preserving the history is always a good thing. Looks great and saved the real decal and survivor appearance. cool

Chris, that's a great example of why sometimes it's better to preserve rather than restore. Well done!
