The metal on the most of the car was paper thin anything that rain has beat directly on is really gone.

That is actually a hand rail we call it twigg rail Here in ga. The post and the top And bottom are black locust just like split rail fences. And the twigg part is mt laurel mt folk call it ivy's. We have them same on the interior of the cabin but without the bark.

Great car story and cool fence. You all have a lot more mountain laurel then we in MD have. It must be really time-consuming to do the moutain laurel part...did you do yours yourself?
about the car...was it typical for local racers of that era to have sponsors? Or was the decal used in some way as a cover for having a hepped up car?

I did not do the laurel work you cant really buy it down here it has to be harvested in the national forest and the type of guys that do the work have the permits to do so. As for the race car i have no idea. In my mind i like to think a local pure station owner gave him some a few cents off per gallon to put the sticker on. But thats just in a hope and a prayer.
