Is it an original and can you legally own it without a federal license?

Beautiful gun Steve, I went through all the ATF licensing years ago to own one and by the time I got it lined up the price of the Thompson had jumped by 5k, it's on my bucket list.

Your right Neil, I didn't mention the "huge cost" that's involved doing this in states that allow you to own one......they make it pretty cost prohibitive. Semi auto is good for me, 50-100 rd drum = burning up the barrel at full auto

Did it come with the violin case? hahahaha ! I think that was a myth.....original's must have had a lot shorter barrel, this thing barely fits in my gun case ! Here it is with a 30 rd stick mag....not as cool as the drum but much easier to load !

The original Thompson Machine Guns used during WWI, "Roaring 20s", WWII, Korea and 'Nam had much shorter barrels than the one you have Steve... (going by the photo) Originally they had either a 10" length or a 12" length barrel...
My First Sgt carried a modified Thompson in 'Nam... It had a 10" barrel with flash adapter, to help cut down on recoil.... He could take down small trees and palm fond with at .45 ball ammo...
It's range was nothing. About comparable to the M-3 Grease gun. Being a heavier unit, the Thompson's recoil was easier to control...
I can speak from personal experience how great it was to hear "it clear it's throat"...
