Well it was a long drive and a potentially scetchy deal at first glance...but in the end it was all legit. These Mobil signs were posted for sale locally from the estate holders children. I had contacted them immediatly after I saw the ad and never heard from them for almost 3 weeks. He finally called me and after speaking with him and hearing the brief descriptions a little better it seemed I had a roadtrip to take! The father who recently passed was a long time Mobil mechanical engineer in the 60's-70's. He would travel all over the region transforming the old stations to the "NEW" look of the day. Along his travels over the years a beautiful set of SSP right/left facing flat peggys followed him home as well as an amazing original weathervane. Over the years I've always had a soft spot for Mobil...I'm glad I can give this trio a place to graze for years to come. Oh boy the wife isnt gonna like to see 3 more woman in the barn...

They didnt give them away but they were cheap considering the amazing condition after I cleaned them up a bit I can't say I've seen much nicer.

Yea NOPE no T-53 's here...lol. That was my biggest concern without hearing the entire story behind them at first and pretty bad pics. But once I laid eyes on them and flipped them over it was pretty clear as day....they were the real deal.

The weathervane is different from what I've seen before.... The ones I removed were 3 piece with 2 small pegasus surrounding a center support.... Seems strange to cover the details on the pegasus....

My Dad had one that was 2 piece. It had the center support attached to the bottom of the Pegasus...

A lot of the fake Pegasus on Ebay and at shows are marked T-53 on the belly...

Most original Pegasus were "wall hangers". Meant to hang on the facade of the station... (Some larger Pegasus were on the roofs of certain styled stations... and the Neon Pegasus are the exceptions)

So far none of the "fakes" have the mounting brackets that the originals have....

Hope this helps....

Bob, I agree It does seem like a poorly thought design. Not sure if it was early or later design. Mine appears to be identical to the one on page 41 of Amistadi's advertising book. It is 2 side holders that rest on each side of the horse with bolts through it and they are welded to the steel pole which is hollow.

Blkangus..yep these guys hit it right on the head, do a completed search on ebay for mobil pegasus. I've seen them recently go for as much as 1500.00+

Bob,
I have 2 Pegasus weather vanes, both have 2 holes in belly & double sided single pc metal. I have never seen a 2 pc as you described [2 back to back w/ shaft in middle].

GREAT FIND Eric.

I had 2 of them, one from a station in Portland and one from a station in Barstow....

I figured they were common. Maybe they were less so, than I thought?

I wasn't collecting Mobilgas items, so I gave them away.... Story of my Collecting life... LOL

db, your weathervanes sound like the ones my Dad had...

Great Signs Eric! I was the other guy "bidding" against you, funny how it turned into a bidding war off a craigslist add! It was fun while it lasted! Congrats they went to a good home and am glad an old gasser got them enjoy!
