Yes, you are right. I've never heard of a Lion Gas Station out in Canada. But, then again I was under the impression that Flying A never made it past the border. Bob Richards, corrected me on that.

Was able to "steal" this magazine ad. Glad my Canadian neighbors didn't see it first.... August 1, 1933, Veedol magazine ad letting Canadians know that Veedol could now be found in sealed cans: In the ad are also the "Small Diamond Star Burst" Imperial 1 Qt can and Imperial 6 Qt can.... I have been trying to date the Small Diamond cans for a while.... As Veedol went to the "Large Diamond Star Burst logo almost immediately....

Bob, sharp eye there. Great score. I always assumed that the small diamond was their first round sealed quart in 1933 and you have now confirmed it. Strange that it wasn't used on the other tins like the rectangular 6 quart tin or the tall round one gallon, none that I am aware of at least. The small diamond Canadian quarts are fairly scarce so they probably were not used very long before going to the larger style. Are the US versions similar? Don.

Don, if you look closely at the ad. The small blurb on the left hand side reads that "At leading stores is 6 Qt cans". I am taking for granted that your can is a 2 gallon? I went out to take photos of my Small Diamonds vs Large Diamonds and I noticed something I hadn't paid attention to before... It shows in Randy's photos... US Small Diamond cans had a small orange diamond whereas the Canadian version did not... Plus a can of Veedol oil in the US was 30 cents, not the 40 cents as a can was in Canada.... I have been attempting to put forth a little display that shows the progression of Tide Water items through Getty... (so if anyone has an extra tan 1# grease can... I could really use one for my little display) (I'm sorry if we have bored any of you that don't Collect Tide Water cans.... LOL)

So my two black Veedol tins on the bottom shelf, the rectangular 6 imperial quart and the tall round 4 imperial quart (one imperial gallon), would be considered small diamond tins since their images are within the white/orange rectangle?! Aha!! Always learning something new on this site. Don't know what the exchange rate was in 1933, also Canadian quarts are 25% larger than the US quarts, but you would expect stuff up here to cost more. It still does!! Cheers, Don.
