Hey all I've been looking and reading for a few weeks now...I really like the 40's and 50's Tokheim 39 300's Bennett 966 1066 756 and 766. I have bought one 966 so far. I was wondering, if I come across a nice unrestored pump like I mentioned above. What is a general rule of thumb for pricing. I see them from 400-700 in decent condition with straight sheet metal and no rust through. Seems like I've answered my own question but just wondering your thoughts...experience is everything when knowing when to buy....thank you

I am fairly new to the hobby myself. One of the best things I can offer to you is, you want to try to find the most complete pumps you can; some parts can be difficult to locate and are not reproduced yet. I do however break my own rules occasionally when it comes to that, I bought a tokheim 620 yesterday without the bonnet and skins, you can get the bonnet and skins, but they are usually very expensive.
Price for resale or price to keep that is the question. If you’re going to be buying more pumps in the future you should invest in Jack Slims pump pricing book it’s loaded with good info. That book and a touch of common sense you should do well with pump collecting . Oh ya, and welcome to the hobby and good luck with it.

Canadiandiesel, I believe you and I have discussed this before. You are trying to compare apples and oranges, and it just isn't going to work.

It's a supply and demand issue. In Canada we were minimalist and didn't keep these older pumps lying around. If items were no longer of utility they got scrapped. The ones that did survive were left outside and over time the elements took their toll.

If you want to pay American prices then you are going to have to travel to the US and buy in that local economy.

In Canada clean rust free examples of the pumps you are referring to will be in the $1000-$1500.00 range. Somebody will have to make some money for the time, effort, expenses and taxes paid at the border.

Big Block Cat, you're right; an original bonnet/top for a Tokheim 600 series visible pump is expensive and difficult to find. No repro's made.

Pick up a copy of Jack Sim's, "An Illustrated Guide to GasPumps Identification and Price Guide." It is a must for identifying pumps and can give you a good starting point on prices. It is a must...an absolute must have. (Have I emphasized that point enough?) In fact, buy two..leave one at home for reading and put the other one in the truck/car for reference when travelling.

Most of the resto pumps I have found that are still sitting around in Canada have been rotten for the most part as the good ones that were left 20 years ago have already been picked and restored when prices were lower. All you seem to find today are rusted out, and only the odd barn find may prove that different. In either case they've mostly been in the 750.00 to 900 range for the lemons I have seen lately.

That's why I took my truck down to the states last week and bought five down there. I still paid between $600 and $1000 US for some clean rust free pumps and hauled them back and paid GST bringing them in. Now they're worth $1000 to $1500 CDN as Dave said and I wouldn't part with any of them for less. If you find anything decent for less and it's clean, you best jump on it quickly as their few and far between now. FYI, Bennett's Wayne's and Gilbarco's were the most prominent pumps used in Canada through the periods you're looking at. I've been told by many that Tokeheim pumps were not sold into Canada in the 50's so if you're trying to be correct, do your research and the Bennett's and Wayne's are the most sought after around here.
