i'm about to install the door seals on my M+S or Wayne 80. the seals came with rivets, my doors don't have rivets or holes for rivets. when i called the place i got the kit from they said they haven't heard of 80's that dont have the riveted seals. since i have no holes i'm not going to drill holes in my nicely repainted doors so i'm going to use only adheisive. the type i use for auto weather stripping. is that ok?

There were some MS80 delivered from the factory without the door weatherseal. Those doors would have no holes since they were not using the trim. I have restored at least 50, no exageration, of these pumps and have never used the door rubber. You can see how they look without by checking out my site. Look under For Sale....Pumps. Scroll down and you will see the sold units. A lot of what you need will show there. Paul www.severngaspumps.com

They look better without the rubber. I don't know anyone who puts the rubber back. And if yours has no holes then wouldn't it even be smarter to not put it on? Are you worried about wind noise? Lol

I've done two of these pumps. I used the rivets, even with the rivets it is tricky to get the weatherstrip to form properly around the top corners of the doors. Sharp radius corner for a flat weatherstrip. I think if you used adhesive only, those corners would be a problem. Bear in mind, adhesives work very well and have amazing bonding strength. The bond between the weatherstrip, adhesive and paint will be stronger than the bond between primer and paint. If the weatherstrip pulls away it will probably cause the paint to lift.

I agree with Paul that on this particular model the weatherstrip doesn't enhance the appearance of the pump. I concur with his advice to just not use the weatherstrip.

Moonphone, I believe it was myself that you talked with. I have also restored a lot of the Wayne & M-S 80 model pumps and have always installed the door rubber because I like the looks of it. You could use the adhesive but why not drill the holes if you want to install the rubber? No one will ever see the holes as they are hidden by the rubber and the door being closed. As for forming the rubber around the corners at the top of the door the trick is to relief V cut the rubber in about 6 - 8 spots per corner so it will follow the contour of the radius. Don’t cut all of the way through the rubber only about a 2/3’s of the way on the edge that lays on the door not the edge that sticks out from under the door. If you need any help feel free to call. Good luck

Rivits are the way to go. the adheasive will never hold the seals and will drive you to drink heavily while trying to do it. I have used foam seals (weatherstripping)with the glue on the one side and it works but looks nothing like the correct seals with the rivits. A tip for the curves is use a heat gun or other source to warm the strips when working with them....makes a difference. Good Luck!

I used the automotive weather seal stuff and my door seals stayed on fine. Way before I even knew about this site (or vendors for restorations) I made my own out of garage door seal.... trimmed away all that I didn't need and it worked. I liked the looks of the rubber. John

i do like the look of the seals. its going to a combination of adhesive, trimming, rivets, and heat gun.

the main reason i want to use the seals is because i don't want the door banging against the sides and possibly chipping the paint. is there some other type of seal or gasket that someone else used, like whats used for house windows or something?

As I explained before, I never use the door seals. Instead I use small 1/2 felt bumpers that you get at Home Depot. These are placed over the holes, on the back of the door, where the rivets went. Thereby putting them between the door and pump side. It gives the protection needed usually. After assembly and fitting, you might need to adjust the location of a bumper or two?
