Hello to all. My name is Greg. Just joined this site yesterday and want to post a question. Better tell you all about me first.
Avid muscle car collector and restorer as well as a stock car chassis builder. Getting older not working on as many things as in the past so I started decorating my shop. Well guess what gas station memorabilia really looks good. Got some signs fist then some oil cans( 60s and 70s) muscle cars you know. Then my father in law gave me a gas pump for Christmas so then it was game on!! I love looking for old and rare auto parts so I am constantly looking everywhere for BOTH now. Here is my question.
I think I ran across the Holy grail of oil cans. Somebody let me know. Itis a pre turn of the century Perfection kerosene storage can 30" tall 18" diameter 5" screw on lid. Made od galvanized steel. On the front it says "Perfection Oil" below that it says " All its name implies" below that it says " Standard oil Chicago (Indiana)" Here is the cool part it is painted in gold & green. Before standard went to red and white.
Found in a barn in central Indiana In remarkable shape. NO RUST.
Brass valve at bottom with a factory welded bung that sticks out at the bottom. It now has its own shelf in the shop looking over my cars. Anybody know what it's worth? Currently not for sale (unless worth a kings ransom)

Greg I think your can was used in general stores. I believe it was used to dispense kerosene. Used for lamps and little heaters people could come in and fill up their small containers. Being that small size maybe it could have been used in a shop or business that used more than the average person and had its own stop from the bulk guy. Not sure but I think it was green to denote Kero? I dont think its worth a ton.

I have the same barrel & gave around $100 for it & a smaller one. As cool as they are it seams a lot of people stay away these since they a big & take up a lot of room.

As Gasoildude stated these large cans usually do not bring bigmoney and are a hard sell. I'm guessing they are from the teens era. I believe your Perfection is quite faded...you can barely see the lantern and other details. Threw in a pic of the Red Crown also. Bought both at local farm auctions.
