A while back there was a discussion of the Texaco diesel wide spray pump plate. There is one on ebay right now. No reserve. This is not mine nor do I know the owner. Thought you would like to know.

I will say $2500. That may be conservative. This is a real nice specimen, but it is a slow economy and Christmas is coming.....

Since I'm not a Texaco guy per se, is the story true about the design being changed due to anti-Japanese sentiment during WW2? Hopefully someone knowledgeable in Texaco items could validate this for me, I'm curious.
Thank you,
Darin

Darin,

That's what I have always heard too. The sign does look like a Japanese "rising sun flag".

That is the story I have always heard as well. I also heard that they did a marketing study back in the day and, allegedly, Texaco changed the "T" from black trimmed to white because the group found it more appealing. Don't know if either of those stories are true or an urban myth. I had the phone number to the guy who was a historian for Texaco. Will have to see if I can find it.

Alex,

Actually they trimmed the black from the T because the white border appealed more to woman drivers than the black did.

The wide spray is rarer than the Fuel Chief 1, and brought way less money.
I know the Fuel Chief was in better condition, But the wide spray was not that bad IMO. I would have thought it would bring a little more.

well if the condition was the same as the fuel chief it likely would have,,, a condition 9.8 is half again as much as a 8.8 , don't forget the colour has a lot to do with it as well..those red and white signs kinda blend in together but the yellow really stands out.Dollar for dollar I would still pick the fuel chief ( yellow ). So many times we forget , condition, condition, condition....

Here is a prime example just from an auction in Ontario last Saturday... this is NOT a rare sign,,,The one with chips brings $6200.00 and this MINT one on Sat brought $10,000 plus buyers premium and HST ( taxes )= $12,500. One year apart..

Red Indian 26x72 paid $4000 sold $6200 US.jpg Red Indian sign 70x24 sold at auction$10,000 ++ = $12,500.jpg

Where did you guys "READ". That the white T was perferred by women over the Black T ? That sure would be a new one for me...

Thanks Doug

P.S.

The Diesel wide Ray pump plate came out in forties. Several years after the BlackT was phased out.... The globes were blackT's as seen on my website. billstexaco.com

Hi Doug. I don't know if it is an urban legens or not. I wish I could tell you where I heard it, but I do not remember. I remember having conversations with the guy who was the historian for Texaco, but I don't think it came from him. Probably fromanother collector I bought something from and they passed it along to me.

Doug,

I have to remember where I "read" that at. I'll post it once I find it.
