I enjoy FATW but I thought Bert's 50's Diner rated it's own thread. Although its aways from us, Bob likes going here for his B-day and if we are ever in the area, we like to stop for icecream.
This is not a place for dieters as the food is very much like you would expect to be served in the 50's. It's good though. My recommendation would be a banana split with hand-diped ice cream. It's location is in Mechanicsville right on Route 5 in Saint Mary's County Maryland.
A few miles north is the 'Amish Market', though if you find an Amish vendor, I would be suprised. It's a big flea market with a lot of junk, but I haven't been in years. Ditto for the Bargain Barns in Hughesville, a few miles north of the Amish Market, not as noisy or as busy. It is only a block parallel to Route 5 on business Route 5. Driving from north to south you can't miss making your turn at the Harley dealership.
To find a lot of Amish, they have set up their own farm market at the Charlotte Hall Library at the intersection of Route 5 and Route 6 between the Bert's and the 'Amish Market.' I think they are open Wednesdays and Saturdays.
Bert's web site is:
