Okay...I guess the "gamblin man" in me just couldnt pass up this jewel in the rough at Iowa this year...I went to the back of a box truck (vendor named Eddie from Jersey - super cool guy). He had this torched no parking sign in the back (the one pictured) with a small label reading Husky sign underneath...after contemplating buying it we struck a deal...This is the 30 inch double sided tin version with the husky dog, northern lights, and motor oils written across the bottom. There's 2 layers of paint on the sign...as well as some lettering thats harder than granite on the surface...

Anyway here are the pics...One side has enough tar/goo to install a few car windows or fix the cracks on a 1/4 mile stretch of road...I have about 5 hours in it now...The paint underneath is thin so you cant get too crazy or you can go right through the original paint...I will post progress pictures over the following 20 years or so (figure it will take that long to remove the paint on top smile If any of you guys/gals have any "tips" that might help hit me with em...We're going to the beach tomorrow so I will not be able to clean on the sign again until we get back...YOu know you have issues when you want to take a krusty sign like this with you to the beach...and work on it smile If anyone has an extra 30 inch porcelain one around I'll be your huckleberry! Thanks for checking out my post.

Spray it down with some Quick Detailer and use a razor blade. I know it's tin but worth a try. I have had very good luck that way. Just go very slow and be patient.

Thanks for the tip on the quick detailed...kevin...I would opt for the salt water treatment but I have already been warned to leave the sign at the house lol...have any of you guys used "goof off" before? I was reading about it and it sounds pretty good...just not sure if it will toast the original paint.

I don't think "goof off" would be safe to use. Try using Nevr Dull. I used it on a 5 gal rocker can, that had been painted over, with great success. Of course you would need to remove the tar with a razor blade first. Just my two cents...Dale

Doc...I did use some goo gone on the sign...the paint layers over the husky appears to be a gray primer coat with a layer of white on top with black lettering on top of that. I have made it down to the original paint in a few areas ....it would be great to preserve most of the husk's face. That will be tough as part of his face is similar in colors to the primer and white...gonna take it slow and see what I can work out. If it will ends up being torched I will likely get the Vankannels to restore one side.

If it was smaller I could have sneaked it into the luggage lol...we are at the beach with the kids this week...unfortunately it will be after next wed. Before any progress is made....a guy in Iowa saw me working on it and told me to have it done by the next day...didn't happen smile

Home from vacation smile Picked up the nevr dull, quick detailer and nuke bomb (laquer thinner) from the store...nuke is the last resort smile Worked on it for 1.5 hours and removed almost all the tar...now I see why you just pay a few grand for one you can stand to look at and keep rollin wink Will post some pics once I "dent" it so the pics look different than the first I posted!

Yes I will definitely be at Dixie...will likely bring Elliott (our oldest son at 7 smile Whats the deal Paddy? Had fun hanging out in the Spring...

On the Husky sign...well its being stubborn...I attempted Nevr Dull...the sign laughed at me...went the Quick Detailer route...I did make some headway with the razor blade (I need a pack of 500 smile I then hit the ole girl with some paint thinner...whats left of this dog is pure stubborness lol...I didnt completely submerge it but it didnt even budge the paint even with some heavier duty steel wool... Pic is after a few more hours of rubbin... (would post pic of other side however my camera program is giving me fits...) I am leaning towards PAINT STRIPPER...in small doses to the side that appears to be the worst...Figure I'll go light...then neutralize...and keep rollin... If you have any ideas bean me with em wink

I had a painted Coke sign that I used MEK on a rag to clean. Just have to work very slowly. It is pictured here in my garage. If the paint was originally baked on you should be ok just test in a small area first.

Right on...I remember seeing your post a while back about the coke sign (very cool!)...what is MEK (is it a stripper?) I just picked up some Strypeeze from the hardware store...will be careful and take my time with it... I would guess the finish was baked on...

It is a very potent chemical a paint stripper type item. Smells terrible but will peel the paint off about anything. Can buy it a lowes or TSC.
It's proper name is methyl ethyl ketone or something like that.

Right on...I used a bit of the stripper today backed up by a razor...started to make just enough headway to feel like its "going somewhere". If this one doesnt work I'll snag some MEK! Thanks again for the advice and help guys!

Ok...starting to see some dog and color...which is GOOD! Have a long way to go but here she is right now...I did figure out one thing...whatever kind of paint they used should be used on all homes, cars, tanks, jets, etc...its dern near indesctructable...

What started to work...PAINT STRIPPER...yup...and if you put the stripper on...let it sit for a few minutes then hit it with a water hose...the near indestructable paint starts letting go...I guess its kind of a "flash strip" method...then water down and repeat...will still take a long time to do but worth it... Also...if you attempt to "help" the water by using a finger nail...its a no no...as you can remove original paint by rubbing, picking at etc...Apply stripper...gingerly wipe on...let sit for a min or 1.5 min...wash n repeat...

blacktee...right now I'm just under 900 so I have a ways to go before I'm over a grand lol...actually around 12 bucks for stripper...11 for quick detailer...5 for nevrdull...a few packs of razors (say 5 bucks)...and 7 bucks for thinnger...grand total of 40 bucks give or take a few bucks...I started with what I thought would be the roughest side...the original white and gray will be a nightmare to keep around...this sign has around 6 colors...(I believe...tough to tell with different stades of the doggy)....

okay...my post about paint stripper (refrain if you can!!!)...it definitely fades out the original paint! One side is approaching a .5 of 10 smile Other side has a long way to go...no other way to get off the paint than elbow grease it seems...Here's a pic of each side...at the rate I am going I hope this one is finished by Iowa 2012...and that at least one side has a dog that resembles a Husky smile
