A 36 has a visi gauge and a 36B has a sight glass. That is the easiest way. A 36 has a inspection door on the side to see the totalizer a 36B does not. A 36 does not say Tokhiem on the face bezel a 36B does. There are more small differances but the above are the most noticeable.

Yes, the 36 and 36B came in clock face versions. The 36 is rare, I only seen two in photos. Here is one of them.

There are a lot less 36's out there than 36B's [w/ tops!].
Most pumps of either that are Missing Tops had Glass Tops that got broken.

Good luck with a top. You will probably have to get a repop top that does not fit correctly. Visi gauges are hard to come by even though they were used on three models. Tok 870, 34 and 36 used the same visi.

#36 has a special 10 3/4" computer size I have seen in no other pump.
Took me 3 yrs to find one back in the day.
The 8" and 12" computers will not fit right.
Will be doing a couple for Southfloridagas next week. cool

Tops will have to be cut & side bars & top plate replaced.
Never tried it, but the factory used an adapter plate Under the top when they cut a 36B to work

This is indeed a great thread & very informative. I had no idea that I preferred a 36b all along (of course one with clock-face). I sure like all of AD GLASS that comes with the pump.

I have been told one can convert a computer version to that of a clock-face. Can an average collector notice the conversion using a conversion kit?

IF it was done correctly, probably Not. But most that do convert stop short & that is a Dead give away. YOU will always know even if no one else points it out.

Thanks DB.

Do you by chance have a picture of an ORIGINAL 36BDP (clock face) vs. a CONVERTED one from a computer?

So is the top on HuskyBob's pump all glass or is that steel? I found a 36 earlier this year on craigslist that had that same top. By the time I called him, it was already sold. I sure was bummed.

The conversion face looks different than the original clock face. Here is a link showing the two faces.

what I would like to know is WHY
did a #36 pump use a smaller computer that is unique
to that pump.
Tokheim Factory screw up?
Did Veeder Root have to make a head and price wheel shelves to compensate for Tokheim's screw up?

Maybe VR screwed up anticipating the next pumps after the Wayne 40/40A & Tok. 34 would be needing 10" VR's. Tok. might have gotten a Great Deal on buying all 10" that VR produced.
Might be putting the shoe on the correct foot!

So what do you guys think a factory complete 36 with with the converted top that DB shows here and good visi-gauge would go for these days? Might have a shot at one.
