I bought 500 glass negatives, most of which are wraped in Sears catalog pages. I know subject is important, but was wondering what they may be worth and if there is any interest here.I picked this one randomly and is of 2 woman and 2 children. The page is pencil marked Sallie Porter, May 7, 1906 , and the camera settings. May have some of your relatives. LOL.. Catalog page is buggys for $30.00.. Pretty Cool. Thanks for you help. Owen

glass negatives are very collectible, some were found in my town and they were able to print a whole book of town history from them. Might want to check your local Historical center 1st. That is if they came from your town

I don't think there from around here, but i'm not sure. I did find one of a 1909 Harly Dvidson and a couple of Lincoln Beachey and Barney Olfield with Barney's Indy Car and Linoln's airplane. I think they may be worth alot, but not sure. Thanks

...worth your time to have them digitally scanned - and by ALL means make sure the labelled wrappers are kept with the negatives...without context, the images are far less valuable...

I have some glass negatives of old biplanes and cars. Does anyone know how I would go about getting some pictures made from them in this digital age?

I have a scanner that will scan to my computer and then i can print, or you can take them to a video shop and they can do the same.

OWEN, IS THERE ANYWAY TO BACKLIGHT THESE GLASS NEGATIVES TO THE POINT WHERE YOU COULD TAKE A PICTURE WITH YOUR DIGITAL CAMERA SET ON MACRO.
FOR PROCESSING YOU WOULD HAVE TO INVERT (REVERSE) EACH PICTURE WITH A PHOTO EDITING PROGRAM.

I HAVE DONE THIS WITH COLOR KODACHROME SLIDES WITH MUCH SUCESS AND THEY ARE SMALLER 35MM SIZED.

Silver Gelatine Dry Plate Negatives were invented by Dr. Richard L. Maddox and first became available in 1873. They were the first economically successful durable photographic medium. Unlike the wet plate variety gelatine dry plates were more easily transported, usable when dry, and needed less exposure to light than the wet plates. Other distinguishing features between the wet and dry variety were the thinner glass and a more evenly coated emulsion in the dry plate negative form. Dry plate glass negatives were in common use between the 1880s and the late 1920s.

Doc, My scanner has a cradle to hold them, just scan and print.One of the Lincoln beachey ones that i have is the exact photo on the cover of a book called Lincoln Beachey, The man who owned the skyes.Can you say royalties!LOL

That sounds like a really good find!

You might check with Shorpy and see how they scan theirs -- they have some excellent resolution.

For that matter, you could probably post them on shorpy.

I just read an article in the Sun-Sentinel Newspaper recently about a gentleman that had bought a box of glass negatives at a garage sale some time ago... He had them for a few years and after deciding to print a few; it was discovered (documented) these particular glass negatives where taken by Ansel Adams ! ! !

ANSEL ADAMS WOULD BE A GREAT FIND FOR GLASS NEGATIVES. HOWEVER, IF THERE WAS A PHOTOGRAPHER FROM THE PAST WHO GLASS NEGATIVES WOULD HAVE SOME SCENES FOR US ALL TO ENJOY, THAT WOULD BE WALKER EVANS.
