Doc, in 1953 or so, the station probably looked just like this one . Here's a model of a typical Twin Chimney station

Yes that sign is in Macon. The deep rock is about 30 miles north of Kirksville, right off the highway.

I P- Med Doc on the "Chimneys " this former Crown station once had . Basicly the two towers actually held illuminated Crown signs that on a clear night were generally visable for a mile . Ed Shaver

Those are purely aesthetic elements, not functional. I understand that they were called Pylons, and were a common motif in the 50s and early 60s.

PYLONS AS YOU CALL THEM WERE NOT JUST A PART OF GAS STATION ARCHITECTURE, BUT ON SHOPPING CENTERS AS WELL.
