Thanks,

Correct, they were originally neon.

The chrome one is made by Neon Specialty Corp. in Oakland CA. with a patent from 1929.

The green and cream was made by Koken. You can tell this one was specifically a neon by the large tranformer housing on the porcelain back piece.

The neon actually spins and quite an awesome sight in a dark room.

Hey "Racer" where are you from?
Welcome to the site.
Those poles are great. You should do a You Tube video in motion.
What do you race?

Hey "Old Racer",

First off, sorry I picked a name so close to yours. I went ahead and changed it just because it seemed like the right thing to do.

I worked in the built shop for TRD (Toyota Racing Developement) in Costa Mesa CA. We built the engines for the CART cars, then for the IRL and most recently of course NASCAR. Sorry to all of those that don't like us in there, but it is what it is. That's how I came upon "Racer". I recently left there and now reside in Austin TX.

Now that I finally have the ability to take "digital" movies, I think your idea may just have to become reality.

I guess I have to wait to get the name change approved.

Coheley 5, sorry to have used your thread to show off, but this may help. You didn't specify your price range for the pole you're looking for, but if you'de like a decent one at a great price check out this auction:

cheap barber pole
Bid through Old Gas of course - 230570247110

If you can get it for under $150 you stole it, under $200 you made a great buy. The most important thing when buying a pole is to look for a good glass. This one is a Marvy 55 and is relatively unchanged since 1949. The glass is 6 x 16 and would cost you over $125 to replace if it were broken, and I don't think this one is. The shipping is cheap too.

If you want an older, more collectable and better looking pole, get a cast iron/porcelain pole, but it's going to cost you more up front and a restoration will be considerably more.

Hey thats ok , welcome to old gas I have alot of collectables just trying to get another. I love your barber poles, I went to an auction last week and drove a couple hours where there was a great looking pole(on line )when I got there the glass was broken all the way around, did not even stay until it was auctioned.

Not a problem at all on the name. No big deal. Small world. We drag raced the West Coast back in the 70's. I have spent a lot of time in Austin as well.
I love those poles. I hope you get time to do the video.
