Rust staining can be lightened/remove by using dilute muriatic acid. Use test spots for proper strength.

For surface rust, dullness, grease, and other blemishes, MEGUIAR'S MEDIUM CUT CLEANER and a Grey SCOTCH-BRITE Pad have always worked wonders for me. It fills scratches and leaves a terrific shine. Both of these items are availabe for sale at Vic's Place 888 918 7867.

Hi Robert,
Remember that rust stains on the porcelain are a lot different than chipped porcelain with rust on the metal sign.
You can polish out the rust stains as mentioned above. I'd recommend a white 3M Scotch Brite pad first, as it is less agressive and will leave finer micro-scratches than the gray.
Rust directly on the metal from missing porcelain is a different deal. You can sand the rust off, prime and touch up with paint or treat it with one of the "rust converter" products. Be aware that some buyers don't appreciate a touched up sign and would rather you don't. I'd recommend cleaning and polishing, leave the painting alone but put a nice coat of car wax on it. A sign that has rust issues shouldn't be out in the weather if you don't want it to deteriorate.
