Hey Dave, your pump is cool. I should have not sold it to my friend and the other day he was saying he should have not sold it. Glad it is in a good home.

I picked up this Red Crown thermometer for $75.00 on one of my road trips and the Sinclair HC sign (that's a 9.5) for a steal at Iowa Gas after one of the experts in the hobby passed because it wasn't good enough???

Hands down it has to be my MFA Oils and Greases globe. It took two years of me breaking Jarvis down before I got it.

Hard to narrow it down to one so I'm posting both my Wayne 60 and Erie U603 and the station in Western, Nebraska where the Erie was in service as a new pump in the late 20s.

It's a 3D type display , but no motion. The lights illuminate the cars' head lights and tail lights and also the street lights and traffic signals.

These are my favorite things that I got this year. Got them from the I-70 drive-in in Kansas City Missouri. Actually picked the hotel we stayed at because it was 2 minutes away from the drive-in. The junction box came from the Starlite Drive-in in Neligh, Nebraska. I bought parts from the company who origionally made the speakers (they are still in business making the parts) and they now work great.

And this is my other favorite item I got. It is a newer sign but I think it is pretty cool because of the motion.

now all of you know i have been looking for a top for my topless 36b.well here is my favourite freebie/story of the year..yesterday,on our way home fom jeffs,we decided to stop and have sandwiches at the mars cheese castle(if you like cheese stands this is one of the best).since my eyes are getting bad,i missed the exit, and had to double back to get to the place.after going in and spending enough to buy a late 60's pump we got back on the tollway, and a half mile down the road,i saw something on the side of the road."STOP!!" i yelled!well maria stopped and i ran back and found this "almost" perfect 36b top!!can't imagine where it came from, but what are the odds?so this is my best item of the year!

Good story Mick ;-)
Well around here you won't run into any 36b tops, but most of my best buys of the year has been pretty local, wich is unusual.
I have a hard time to decide between the new Texaco sign I posted in BOTW, a great BP dsp shield and this Krooks/Pratts Kerosene sign. Lets say this is it...it is from between 1910-20 and in very good condition. It was found by the sellers grandfather who was a garbage man in Stockholm, propably more than 70 years ago.
thanks,
Claes

Being a Ford lover. It has to be these three Ford signs.

First is a 6 x 4 NOS Ford Tractors sign.

Second is a DSP verbrite Chicago Ford sign. It was won just recently on eBay and should be to me by Christmas.

Last week I also bid on this Canadian Made Ford sign. Made by St Thomas Metal Signs. It is a double sided painted steel with the reflective white paint. The reserve was not met but made a good deal on it after the auction ended. Should be in my possesion this week!

Definitely the best two things I found this year were a totally cherry National Simplex, a Sharmeter clockface and a Texaco Fuel Chief sign. The Simplex was found inside a barn, abandoned by the property's previous owner, and the Sharmeter I got from a guy who delivered fuel to that very pump on a farm for 40 years. When it finally broke he tore it out but thought it was neat and decided to keep it.

One of my best would have to be this NOS Cities Service, double sided, 42 inch sign in the original hanger! I got it from KOOLMOTOR and he got it from Oslo Steve, who in turn, bought it at Iowa Gas in 2009! Its in my shop to stay for a good long time!!

I didnt really have buys of the year but I have accomplished some thing that made my year. I got the look I was trying for. Well almost, I need to get the greasy well worn look. By the way if you get your nose right up against your computer screen you can smell the old gas station smell!!

...looks like the original name of the establishment was something other than 'City Creek Inn', as those letters look a lot newer than the sign itself...it would be interesting to know what's under that pink paint... [/quote]

You are correct, it was originally called Covered Wagon Motel. I do have an old photo how it looked back in 1954. It is one of the projects on my list to get it redone back to original.

I had several good buys this year, but this was my favorite. I was very happy to get this sign.

I would have to say my favorite buy of the year would be this rare Marathon globe. It was one of the globes I picked out of the books that I said someday I was going to own, and someday came thanks to Scott Benjamin.
Take care,

Here's my personal favorites of the year...Two original NC partially embossed shields...a NC state part. embossed route 9 (I grew up near this road) and a Illi Route 66 Shield from the 50s...) Muchos thanks to Agentsteel here on oldgas (Jake) and my friend Robert for the NC signs! Not pure petro but if you were driving a car (which runs on petro/gas)...you'd have seen these on the side of the rd/hwy in western NC smile

Hey Grabber,
Is Chimney Rock Park in the Smokey Mountains? I think we camped there every year as a kid. I remember it being Chimney someting. Now you can't camp there, it's just a picnic area.
We use to see bears in camp every night. Cool sign!

Well I guess technically Chimney Rock Park is in the Blue Ridge Mountains...(its about 20 miles south of asheville nc...and is neighbor to Lake Lure NC...There are quite a few campgrounds in Chimney Rock and there are black bears all over the place there smile I think the Smokey Mountains start due west of Asheville however the blue ridge and smokey's are darn close to each other...These signs were put up all over western NC back in the day...most are fairly toasted though...I found this one on craigslist...when I called the guy selling it ended up being a friend of mine that was selling it smile She's on the keeper wall! Thanks for the kudos...if you go to dixie gas in the spring say hello...we're usually set up on the left side of the road going up the hill in front of the barn.
Joey

Chris, I got 100 cans of stuff from him. About 60 quarts of oil, 15 five gallon cans (mostly Shamrock, but also Goodyear and Texas Refinery Corp.), a few cans of Conoco radiator treatment, a few cans of Conoco quick flush, and a few cans of Shamrock motorboat oil. You must be the guy he told me about that wants to buy everything left for $2 a can. There's not much left, as the lady before me bought 600 metal cans. Call me if you want to talk about what he has left. I don't think its worth the drive from San Antonio personally. I would go out there for you if you needed me to.

My buy of the year is small, oh so small. Being a small child in a "grown up" body, I seem to gravitate towards collecting toys.

After a few years of looking and hunting, I found one of the "Holy Grails" of toys (IMO). Now there are quite a few of these cars out there, that are incomplete. Some missing wheels and some have bent axles, most are missing the red "exhaust", some even missing the driver. But all that I had ever seen, were missing the most important item......

So here is my "Buy of the Year", LOL (alongside one I picked up a few years ago)

Did I mention that every one I had seen in the past was missing the most important thing?

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

This "Jet-action Tydol Ethyl" car even has the original "New Veedol for you motor oil" balloon with it. The balloon is in pretty good shape, especially for being atleast 60 years old.

Mick, I could lie and say ..... no. Are you kidding it's over 60 years old, probably closer to 65 years old.

But, being the child I am,............................. I did.

The balloon started inflating and while unfolding it developed a small crack. But for a short period of time, it was inflated. LOL

Favorite sign of the year would be this single sided tin one I picked up at Iowa gas that was used in an oil can display. Dad had the oil can rack so he ended up with the sign.

Also got this sign at Columbus

Favorite globes, I picked up the Sinclair Ethyl from Jackie Knott at Iowa also. There are 4 different versions of this type globe. I also got the US Motors at Iowa on the first day at about noon, about 5 minutes after we pulled into the lot. I had a single lens, now I have a nice complete one too.

Also ended up with a Pennant globe. I bought two different lenses and was able to trade off one lens for a match to the other so I now have a complete set

Got a few cans and smalls but the item that gets the most comments is my original fiberglass Dino.

I also scored this nice calander from my grandpas company.

All in all a good year for the collection. Made it to the Columbia show, Peotone twice, Columbus and Iowa. Saw some friends, ate some good food, spent all of my extra cash and then some. Looking forward to Columbia again in a couple of weeks!

Man, I need to read a little before I post! I had this in the wrong spot!! LOL These 2 pumps are the best ones I've ever gotten and I suppose its because they're both porcelain and pretty darn rare! I got the Tokheim 36B out of New York on an Ebay listing and the porcelain Erie came from my good friend Jeff Anderson that lives over by Milwaukee! I just finished cleaning the 36B up and I'm ready to start on the Erie next! Maybe I'm just partial to Cities Service pumps but how many do you see done in porcelain?? Enjoy!!!

So here is my "Buy of the Year", LOL (alongside one I picked up a few years ago)

Did I mention that every one I had seen in the past was missing the most important thing?

This "Jet-action Tydol Ethyl" car even has the original "New Veedol for you motor oil" balloon with it. The balloon is in pretty good shape, especially for being atleast 60 years old.

WOW!!!! I cant say here, what my first response was, but WOW!!!

Here's my one and only buy of the year. It's a Bennett 900 series. The pump itself is not that remarkable, but how I got it is. I was up in Michigan's U.P. for a week for work. On the last day of the project, I decided to drive around the town. I spotted a large scrap yard, and thought to myself,
"If they will let me look around, I might find a pump."
So I got permission to go into the yard, but no luck on finding a pump. I was all set to leave, when I spotted another guy walking around the yard looking for stuff as well. I struck up a conversation with him and he proceeded to tell me about all the treasures he had found in that yard. While he was talking to me, an old pickup loaded with junk entered the yard and drove past us. Something in the truck caught my eye. It looked like a tractor hood, but no, that's was not right,as it was too long. I had almost completely tuned the other guy out as I stared at this object in the truck when it dawned on me that it was a pump. I said to the guy,
"I'm sorry, you gotta excuse me."
and walked away. I ended up buying the thing right out of the truck. The man with the truck helped me load it into my van, and I had myself a new 900 series. It still amazes me that had I left 30 seconds earlier that I would have totally missed it.

I didn't buy a whole lot of 'stuff' this year - but this is my favorite.

The only set known to exist - there isn't even a set of 'Regular' lenses known from this company.

Later . . .

Are the Cities Service signs part of the porcelain on the pumps?
If so that seems like a very cool set of pumps you got there.
Is there any other pumps that have the gas brand built into the porcelain on the pump?

Rick--Yes the Cities Service logos are part of the porcelain finish. I know that there were other porcelain finished pumps but I don't know about the logos.

I just received this one in the mail today. First Union Oil gas gauge stick I've seen. How it survived is beyond me, as it is made out of heavy cardboard. One to two uses and it would have been toast.

Here is my favorite of the year. It is sitting above my computer desk next to another old fave piece, my ceramic Champion Spark Plug lamp.

Not only did I finally find this Zephyr Supreme Ethyl globe, but I got to spend most of the day with some good Oldgas friends at the same time.

This would be my favorite from 2010. 40" X 75" Painted Metal which makes it even better. Dated A-6-39 on all three pieces and on both sides of those pieces. RARITY & AUTHENTICITY come to mind. Has anyone seen a photo of this sign ? LMAO
