Too guys facing each other, a buyer and a seller. The buyer says "How much do you want for that." The seller says "I don't know, what will you give me for it."

My answer, "You are the seller, you set the price," I'll either say yes, or will keep on walking.

Seller insists on you making an offer. My answer "$100.00" (assuming it is worth much more).

Seller sometimes says OK (you wish you had more days like this), but will usually say, "Oh no, it's worth $1000.00, I watch Pickers."

My answer, "So, somewhere between my $100.00 and your $1000.00 is a price we can probably agree on, what do you want for this ....?"

Most of the time you will keep on walking, but as Mark says above, set the price you are willing to pay and stick to it. You can't win (or buy) them all.

My father-n-law had a set of good used tires he wanted to get rid of. He set them out in the front yard by the road with a sign that read "FREE". No one stopped to check them out. A couple days went by, then he changed the sign to read $25. They tires disappeared sometime that night.

LOL..I personally watched two guys at a swapmeet go back & fourth like an Abbott & Costello routine for nearly an hour.
The buyer walked up to the seller and asked,"What do you want for this?"
The seller replied,"What will you give me?"
The buyer then said,"How much?"
The seller,"Make me an offer"
The buyer,"What do ya gotta have?"
The seller,"What's it worth to ya?"
The buyer,What's your magic number?"
The seller,"What's yours?"
The buyer,"I"m not really following these prices.."
The seller,"Me either, make me an offer"
The buyer,"What do ya gotta have for it?"
The seller,"What's it worth to ya?"...

This banter went on & on,as both kept waiting for the other to declare a price 1st..classic.

...I've heard 'BBQ Chicken' refer to that as 'someone putting on their scaredy pants'...terrified they'll sell an item for $1-2 less than they can get for it...

Looking for better Gulf items: signs, globes, cans and paper - especially porcelain Gulf flanges, and Gulf A-38 & A-62 ad glass...

I loved your story about the "newly-valuable" tires disappearing overnight, CircaDesigns. Another great lesson about human nature learned! Thanks for sharing. John in Wisconsin

Ohio Oil: I don't mind haggling or someone making a reasonable offer. But, in my case the books sold for $2 at the used bookstore uptown. A quarter was already a bargin. I don't mind a person asking me my best price. But i was negotiating. For a nickel I would throw them out. But if someone is insulting...that's another story. LOL

This happened a few years ago. My friend who owned the Frontier stations in the fiftys, he is now 82 yrs. old owns a wrecking full of 40's and 50's cars. He'll only sell complete cars no parts. Then only if he's in a good mood. This is what he did to a hotroder and pump collector some of you probably know. They were haggling over the price of a 35 Ford. After lots of negotiations they settled on a price. My friend told him to come back in a week and it would be ready to pick up. When the man came back to pick it up my friend asked him to come to the back of the lot where it was. It was about two feet high setting next to the crusher.
