What do you do with the pump guts ( pump, elec. motor, etc. ) if you plan to restore without reusing them?
Is there a market for the parts or is it just scrap metal?

Scrap metal is where I take them. You get about $5 for the electric motor, $2-$3 for the misc. copper tubing and $15-$25 for the rest.

HERE'S WHAT I DID! I TOOK A SUGGESTION FROM A OL' GASSER ON THE SITE ,AND USED THE MOTOR FOR A GRINDING WHEEL, THE BASE PLATE ON MY PUMP MOTOR HAS 4 HOLES "MOUNTING HOLES" I DRILLED OUT A SPOT ON THE WORK BENCH AND THAT'S ALL SHE WROTE! THE ONLY HARD PART IS REMOVING THE PIN THAT HOLDS THE SMALL WHEEL THAT THE BELT WAS ATTACHED TO ! IT WORKS GREAT! AND THERES A SWITCH FOR BOTH DIRECTIONS ON THE MOTOR THAT WORKS WELL! HOPE THAT HELPS YOU SOME!

Really?...Never thought of that! I have a nice grinder but could use a set-up for a polishing wheel. These motors are just 110v right??

Back in 1985 after I restored my first pump I decided I needed a buffing outfit. Since buffing motors were so expensive I just purchased the wheels from a North Carolina outfit at one of the auto shows and put them on the old gas pump motor. The only problem was the gas pump motors only turn at 1725 rpm.

Recommended speed for buffing is 3600 rpm, and for grinding is 3450 rpm.

Since you can now go to Harbor Took and purchse buffers/grinders for around $35.00 - $40.00 I now recommend you do that. No cleaning up a greasy motor, no wiring, just take it home and plug it in. Sell the old motor for scrap.

They work good for squirel cage fans for the shop and are generally an explosion proof design......

Yeah I noticed the RPM rating on the tag last night when I cleaned it up so I think I'll just add it to my scrap metal pile for my metal sculptures....Might make a fine critter of sort crazy

They are explosion resistant but that also means they are sealed...
..no air/vapors pass through, and most have only a 1/4 or 1/2 hr RATED running time,
check the tag, it should tell.

I've got one that was re-wired to run either direction & use it on my 9" metal lathe. It has got Hot several times, never quit Yet.
By using a step pulley system [motor & shaft] you can use on a buffing shaft.
