found a can today at an antique store paid $25 for it but I hope some one can tell me what the real use for it was? It has a drop down spout and hold 1/2 gallon. says it is an approved can and pat'd date 1916. made of copper and seems to have a thin layer of lead on most of it.

OIL CAN---For adding a measured 1/2 gallon to a vehicles engine!
Doesn't look copper but try a magnet. Most were galvanized. Looks like galvanized with a thin layer of aged patina on the outside!

To transfer Bulk oil from pump to an engine.
As said above by Kevin, your was painted a copper color & is soldered together.
I have one that has an embossed SHELL that is made of copper [pretty when polished].
Have seen a display stand w/
1pt, 1qt, 2qt, 1gal & 5qt flip spouts like yours.

Thanks for the info, I thought it must be an oil can but was not sure. It is so clean and still works so well I just thought it was a cool can.
