REMINDS ME OF THE TYPE OF SHIELD THAT WERE USED ON THE MUCH LARGER BILLBOARD SIZED GREEN FIELD/WHITE LETTERED HIGHWAY DIRECTIONAL SIGNS OVER AND ALONG SIDE THE INTERSTATES. MOST 66 SIGNS WERE ALOT SMALLER IN COMPARISON. JM2C!

Check to see if he has a receipt for it. I know that the newer signs have the sticker on the back to help detour theft. I caught with them there is a fine & possible jail time

Being newer and factoring it's size in, the value is going to drop a little bit. I have been avidly watching 66 signs for the last 3 or so years and prices vary. This includes newer signs as well as old. If "I" could get this sign to my door for $250 - $300.00, it would be a fair deal and I would love to own it. Not a great deal though. Last year I bought a 36 inch Illinois, newer sign for $50.00 shipping included. This was off ebay. Depending on who the buyer is and what they plan to do with it can determine it's value as well. If the buyer is going to sit on it as I would, $300.00 is fair. You wouldn't have any room re-sale at $300.00 I don't think, at least for 5 years or so.

Chances are that is made of aluminium and/or pressed wood. Probably aluminium.

There was a Texas state highway 66. I think now its Hwy 67. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Texas_State_Highway_66I found it existed when someone was selling a square 66 highway sign and of course advertised it as an "original Texas Route 66 sign" I dont know if they made the state highway 66 sign with the interstate highway shape. FYI I dont know that much about road signs. other than if you steal them and get caught at 14, you have to pay the city to put them back up...

For what it's worth, I saw a sign just like this, but about 3' in size rather than 4', sell at auction here in IL in the summer of 2009. The metal was aluminum. The price was in the $30-50 range.

Thanks for the help guys.......The guy did get back to me & Doc was right, it did come off one of those large billboard signs & it is made of aluminum...............thanks again for the help......what ever happened to "agentsteel"...i emailed him about this sign, but no response........
Howdy from a very cold Texas, Let me explain what I feel this sign might be worth. I bought the sign at a texas State surplus property auction. They had just taken down all of the signs in texas as the old Route 66 had been decommissioned. The auction was intense. the first two signs were sold for over $1,000 each. I got the 4th sign for almost the same amount. The difference was, I got the best sign of all the available signs. The big spenders had spent their money and then us old men got our shot. About the 5th sign some bidder said he would pay a given price for all of the larger shield signs that were available. The auctioneer, and the local state accounting office person with him agreed. Then they were all gone. Three days after the auction a man called me fromDallas and said he knew i had bought one of the signs. I agreed that i had. He then wanted me to sell it to him. H e offered me $1500 and said he would drive to my home to pick it up. I took his number and said if I wanted to sell it i would call him. I never did but he called me back twice and raised the offer to $2,500. I still did not sell. The man sounded like a slicker to me and i was a little shy of his intentions. Now, I am in my mid 70's and my health is starting to fade. My family is all female and signs are not their thing. I am willing to consider selling it, but only to somebody that will appreciate it like I do. I saw your web page and sent you a message. That's how we got to this point. I know you are in the sign business. I also see by your selling prices that your customer base are ffolks who appreciate things. I am open to some offer in line with the past and also appreciative of the current inflation of values for things like this. Ken
The sign is aluminum. There are four small holes in the sign. I put two small bolts o\in the top two with some secured wire on the back to hang it. The front surface is white with a coating that is reflective. That is why the photo really highlites the sign and masks the background. An official at the Texas highway dept. told me that they only had 12 of these signs made for the highways overheads in Amarillo, They had all of them at the auction. Ten of them had damages of some sort. I truly think this is aas good a sign as there is still in existance from the Texas route 66 highway. Ken

Things are bigger in Texas, including prices. Way to much for this particular sign.

As many of you know I've had lots of US 66 signs over the years. My thoughts on the value of this sign being "new" and made of aluminum would be a maximum of $600. Just my two cents

I have had a lot of Rt. 66 signs over the years, and have four right now. The most I paid was $250.00. for the black back ground square aluminum signs. There are a lot of them around because when the interstate system started and old Rt. 66 still existed, the state of Illinois, started using these "generic" style. They are genuine Rt.66 signs but not as desireable as the old shield style. The one in question is worth $200.00 to $400.00 tops. Norm.

Right on Norm on the price. I bought one of the signs that you are speaking of off of Craigslist last year. I guy who worked for the road dept. out of the city of Chicago was selling these at a very cheap price. These signs were stamped by IDOT and unused. I wish I would have bought more.

If anyone wants to get a hold of me reliably, email me directly at shields@aaroads.com the image appears to have vanished, but my guess is the sign looked something like this: well, except had only two sixes, and in a narrower shape, but was cut out to shield shape. If so, that is a 1970 federal standard, and Texas used that style from about 1973 to the time US-66 was decommissioned in 1985. They still use that style for other route markers. Value? Maybe around 400 bucks, I'd say. that's my guess, anyway, as I totally missed the picture!

Norm. yep, the black square shield is a 1961 specification. I had one from NM that I sold for $360, and I've seen them change hands for $320 (Illinois), and $450 (Missouri) on eBay. here you can see on the left the 1961 specification, and on the right the 1970, the "America's growing obesity problem" shield shape!
