I had this in my watch to see where it ended up as I had never seen this type before either. I would be interested to hear what Pegasus, Richard thinks of the item? Looks neat but it wouldn't be anything I would bid on. Either it's a really rare vintage item, or a new repo that hasn't had widespread distribution yet. I personally couldn't see production of porcelain license toppers, as it would seem a little costly to make I would think? But I guess if it were an in-house item given to safe company drivers, maybe they would produce a hand full? They said they bought it 8 years ago, so it would seem more would be out there if there were many made?
The thing that made me steer clear of it is the font that says Safe Driving Award. It doesn't look like an old font to me.

I looked through John D. Reynolds book titled "Socony-Vacuum License Plate Markers, History and Descriptions."

In the reproduction section he shows this topper. His description is as follows:

"#21 - This style topper was reportedly created from an original with a similar design. It is a white shield with a white outside border around a red outline. The wording "Socony Vacuum" in black is below a red Pegasus. (He goes on to further describe it). This picture provided with the permission of the seller on Ebay."

This is a very nicely done 36 page booklet. To purchase one you can contact Dave at: daveandlinda@frontiernet.net

I've seen a couple of these before and I agree with John. I'm not interested, for whatever that's worth.
