When were these used? I've found lots of info on the red and white crowns, but little on the gold ones. Any/all info would be greatly appreciated. I picked up a NOS one recently and would like to encorporate it into a pump restoration. Would Standard Oil be correct with this crown?

Thanks! smile

1952-1961, if my memory is correct. Seems like I remember some stragglers into the mid-60s.

Hi Ryan,

According to PCM's Guide to Gas Pump Restoration, Gold Crown globes (premium grade} were used from 1956 to 1961 by Standard of Indiana. There is a color image of the pump showing color combinations and decals. That's the only reference book I have on the subject.

Was there ever a Purple? I thought someone had told me that, but I have obviously never seen one. Not wure what grade that would have been either?

Thanks,

Ryan

Only purple I have seen are the Fantasy clear ones made in a variety of colors.
There was also a swag lamp made for dealers that have a flange on top, bottom extends down approx. 1/2".

At Peotone, I saw a advertising car topper with cardboard inserts with blue and purple crowns and a reference to Purple Power, IIRC. Looked like it attached to something (car roof?) via suction cups. I didn't get a good look to confirm that the crowns were Stanolind style. Wish I could remember the wording on it.
I have never seen a purple crown, but recall the grey and the green crowns when I was a kid. It was a special treat to see those!

Maps,
I have a car/truck roof topper you are referring to. Wording on it is IT'S PURPLE [RED CROWN IN CENTER] IT'S POWERFULL.
I was told it referred to the color of RED CROWN GASOLINE [regular] at the time.

Thanks, Dick-
I never thought about purple referring to the gas color. That's been making me slightly nuts since Peotone.

Nice. That makes sense. Haven't seen that sign before.

Thanks!

That's the sign I saw at Peotone. Either the light or my eyes were bad.
