Picked up my first can today, should I repaint like gas pump or is it more collectable to leave as is? You can't see the sinclair letters very well as is. hope for some help.

Of coarse it is up to you. If you ever wanted to sell it, probably better leaving as is. If you are keeping for yourself it would look cool all painted up to match your pump. Most of my stuff is left as is because it takes me too long to try and restore anything. Good looking can. Mike

This ornamental group I belong to talks about applying wax to indoor iron work. You would have to rewax every now and again. This way it would be original. If it were mine or IIWM

I would have to paint it but that's just me. I can't resist restoring a piece to it's former glory so others can enjoy. Of course I do know which ones not to touch as well.

I think Rick is right. Left alone, it looks like a rusty old can and noone notices ---BUT---paint it up to match a pump and you've got a very eye catching accessory piece that will accent your pump display! I say paint it!!

...I have that same can, in original paint - and it's solid dark green...no white, no red, no pinstripes or highlighted letters...that's the only way I would paint it...
...if you need the paint matched, tell me what kind you intend to use and I'll see about getting a code for you...

This type of can was not found around gas pumps, it was used with tanker truckes. If the farmer ordered 5 gallons of 40w oil, this is how it was delivered.

Jack: I believe you are right for the most part. However, there are exceptions. My mother worked at a country store in Saskatchewan as a young girl. She saw I had some cans similar to the one shown and she said they would have them out by the pumps with Kerosene and even some bulk oil. I showed her my lubster and asked if they didn't have those for bulk oil and she said she didn't rememebr those, but had lots of cans with oil. The farmers would pull up in their grain trucks and cars to gas up and would buy quarts of oil and she said she remembers dipping a ladle into the oil and pouring it into quart jars and gallon buckets. "Hell of a mess," to quote her. She said the store didn't have electricity and she rememebrs hand pumping the visibile pumps. I found out this interesting piece of her history when she was visiting me and she happened to pick up your first book and opened to the visible pumps and said she rememebered those well.....

These type of cans are considered OK to paint and IMO is worth doing. They just look so much better done in paint but I think the advice to stay with the original color scheme is good advise. These were used mainly on trucks and are heavy in both weight and the steel used to make them making them something that was meant to be a working piece and less of an advertising piece. Either way you go, it's a nice piece.

There is always an exception to everything, but I was quoting a ton of literature from the companies that made these cans, and none of them came with a ladle. They were made to fit on the wide shelfs on each side of the tank on the tankers.

Thanks for all the advice, The can does have a little green paint still remianing in the cracks around the handles, I may go ahead and paint it green again and use just a little darker green on the letters just so you can see them . I had picked up this can before at this antique mall about two months ago but did not notice the letters.

Here's one I had painted. Bought it at an antique store in Port Lavaca, TX if I remember correctly for $79. It was pretty straight, but the lid was missing. Looks good next to my Rush mod K done in old Sinclair trim.

I don't believe these cans have gained their true value yet. Right now, they are inexpensive - but can add greatly to your display(s).
Here's one I did in Polarine.
As bought . . .
And as finished with a custom decal to match the M&S 80 and the Lubester.
Later . . .
Jim

The cans do look great along with the pump. I like rust but I can see where rust only probably goes good with other rust. Nice pictures! thanks for posting
