I have a large Porcelain Cities Service sign that has been shot with a shotgun. What is the best way to repair it? I want to do it myself. Thanks, Jimmy

I THINK WHAT YOU SHOULD DO FIRST IS SCRUB THE RUST STAINS OFF FROM AROUND EACH POCK MARK. THOSE DEF ARE HI-LIGHTING EACH CHIP.

I PERSONALLY HAVE FOUND THAT USING SOFT SCRUB WITH BLEACH AND A VERY FINE NO SCRATCH PAD OR 0000 (FOUR ZERO) STEEL WOOL USUALLY DOES THE TRICK. I WOULD DO A TEST AREA FIRST AND SEE HOW IT GOES.

SOFT SCRUB WITH BLEACH IS A THICK CREAMY SUBSTANCE THAT CAN BE SMEARED OUT HEAVILY AND LEFT OVERNIGHT WITH THE SIGN IN A FLAT POSITION. WITH A WET NO SCRATCH PAD OR THE STEEL WOOL BUFF THE RUST STAINS...SEE HOW IT GOES WITH LIGHT PRESSURE AND ADD MORE PRESSURE WHEN NEEDED. SOMETIMES IT'S NOT EASY AND WITH THIS MANY SPOTS ON THAT MANY CHIPS IT'S GONNA TAKE SOME TIME...BE PATIENT.

OTHER GUYS CLAIM THAT BAR KEEPS FRIEND, OVEN CLEANER AND TOILET BOWL CLEANER WORKS AS WELL. REMEMBER TO USE RUBBER GLOVES TO PROTECT YOUR SKIN. OVEN OR TOILET BOWL CLEANERS SHOULD BE USED IN A WELL VENTILATED AREA.

IF YOU WANNA KNOW HOW I WOULD TACKLE SHOULD A LARGE TEDIOUS JOB? I'D PROBABLY USE SPOT PUDDY FROM A TUBE AND A PLASTIC SPREADER. WHEN THAT WAS DRY I'D USE A SOFT CLOTH OR DECENT SHOP PAPER TOWEL AND SOME LACQUER THINNER TO WIPE OFF EXCESS SPOT PUD SO THAT IT IS JUST FILLING THE HOLES AND NOT THE GOOD AREA AROUND THE CHIP. YOU COULD THEN GET YOURSELF A SMALL TOUCH UP BRUSH AND SOME OFF WHITE PAINT. VERY RARELY DOES AN OLD WEATHERED SIGN LIKE YOURS STILL HAVE THAT ORIGINAL WHITEY WHITE COLOR. YOU WILL HAVE TO DETERMINE WHAT TINT THE WHITE WILL NEED BY MIXING AND TESTING A FEW SAMPLES. AS FOR THE LETTERS, AGAIN YOU WILL HAVE TO MIX AND TEST A FEW TONES OF GREEN. WHAT'S DIFFICULT THEN MIXING AND TESTING OIL BASED POLY PAINTS IF THAT THEY USUALLY DRY A BIT DARKER THAN THEY GO ON. SO IF YOU HAVE A SLIGHTLY LIGHTER GREEN THAT WHAT IS ON THE SIGN...YOU'LL PROBABLY END UP WITH SOMETHING PRETTY CLOSE WHEN IT DRIES IN A FEW HOURS.

I'D LIKE TO SEE HOW THIS COMES OUT AS YOU GO ALONG WITH YOUR PROJECT. FEEL FREE TO FORWARD ANY SHOTS TO ME AS YOU PROGRESS. wink

Hi Jimmy. Im a new guy on this block and have had a few postings here and always picking up bits of info and sometimes able to pass a few on. First the dirtbags used two different shotgun loads. larger holes, a duck load and the smaller holes a quail load, fired after the other. Thats my CSI for the day. Anyway too bad you couldnt try to hammer and dolly the bad ones cause Im sure they are jagged. Once filled with what ever filler you choose. (I like the autobody type) wet sand with 400 and 600 grit. I do air brushing on my pumps and things and it makes it easy to fog or blend into the good areas. There are some good "water born" paints out there in hobby shops. they come in small bottles and tinting is easy since your are working with green also. It will never look good up close but will pass once on the wall. I saved a Signal sign this way and after applying my artistic ability to it no collector wanted it. critics said it looked good considering it had 12 .45 holes in it...................Roger

I think Matt is right. That type Cities sign is not that expensive anyway. Clean it and hang it. A better displayable one will come along for a very reasonable price...Dale

I "third" that opinion.

Yeah I'd clean it in the method Doc described and hang it. Barkeepers and 0000 steel wool is what I use and it takes rust right off. Wet the sign, sprinkle some on and work into a paste with a wet paper towel. Let sit 3-4 minutes and buff off with the steel wool. Don't let it sit more than that or it could dull your finish.

If you do go the fill and paint route, I'd suggest getting yourself a little hobbyists airbrush. The finish will come out smoother and thinner than a brush job and you can blend/fade it in to the surrounding area easier.
