I would leave it alone, too. The etched lettering is not going anywhere -- it'll be fine underneath that decal... You don't have the only Guaranteed Measure globe, but you might have the only one with the Imperial decal. That decal is part of the early history of the globe - I'd keep it for sure.

What would really be cool is if you could remove the decal from one side and re-apply it to glass or something to preserve it.This would have to be done piece by piece, any preservationists here?

Your wood floor looks nice also, is that hickory?

Another vote for leave it alone. It looks great the way it is and it is plain to see that it is an original.
However, it's really none of my business........

I guess I have decide to leave it alone for now anyway. I have had a few emails regarding selling the globe so I am giving it some thought as well. If I keep it it will be sitting on top of a clockface pump I have Thanks for the input Steve

...looks like Scott Benjamin is now offering this globe for sale?...from gasglobes.com:

"I am picking up a rare chimney cap Guaranteed Measure globe next week. Globe has early 1920s Imperial decal on it which can be easily removed or left on it. Let me know if you are interested."

Looking for better Gulf items: signs, globes, cans and paper - especially porcelain Gulf flanges, and Gulf A-38 & A-62 ad glass...

It will be interesting to see what the dealer buying this globe will do as in terms of marking it up. I am very surprised no one on this site would step up make a good offer to buy it. It is really a great piece. Personally, I would leave it alone, that way the issue of originality will not come up. Had I known it would be offered for sale, I would have made a good offer, but did not follow this thread that closely.

I am sure there were very many that stepped up and made offers from this site, every time I list something for sale I get about 20 emails or PM's to every 1 response posted on oldgas
