I WAS JUST GIVEN A TOKHEIM CLOCK FACE GAS PUMP THAT HAS NO ID TAGS ON IT. WHEN I LOOKED INTO THE TOKHEIM 850 CLOCK FACE I HAVE FOUND ONLY PICTURES OF ROUND CYLINDER TYPE BODIES. MY PUMP HAS A SQUARE BODY. IS THIS STILL A 850 MODEL? IS ONE MORE HARD TO FIND THEN THE OTHER?
I WILL POST SOME PICTURES OF IT TONIGHT
THANKS
JIM

if its an 850, yes there is a rectangle shaped lower body model.i am not positive but i do believe these are the more desirable of the two.heres a link to a square 850 http://www.gaspumps.info/gallery/v/pumps...g2_enterAlbum=0

Jim-- According to Jacks book, the 850 was made in both the round and square versions. The round version was first made in 1930 and had different innards than the pumps made in 1931 and after. The square version was first made in 1931.
Get yourself a copy of Jacks book, its invaluable when looking at buying an old pump that you don't recognize. You can buy them on this site at the top of the forum and it helps maintain the site.
Pretty nice pump to be just given! If you want to sell it, just post it in the for sale area, it probably won't last long! I'd even be interested! Congratulations! Lets see some pictures!

It should be marked on the face wether it's an 850 or 950

Not bad for a free gas pump!
Any idea on a value?
This is one of those situations where you can have this but you can't sell it.

I gotta get more friends like yours! That pump is cherry. I know what you mean about not selling it though. There's certain things people have given me that I'd feel funny about selling as they were given to me with the intention of me enjoying them. Plus, that pump would be too nice for me to part with!

I am now a proud owner of Jack's book, and I have to say the book is not what I expected but I loved every page. I still am not sure what I have. By the picture of the square body clock face the fuel discharge and the nozzle holder are on different sides, mine are on the same side like the picture of the 950. My face plate says 850 but its a reproduction. Did some 850s have the discharge & nozzle on the same side?

The 850/950 could be ordered or changed so the visi & noz were on the same side, depending on what the station owner wanted/needed.

"to say the book is not what I expected but I loved every page."
What were you expecting in the book ?

There is more pictures than words, thats my kinda book. I thought there would be more actual real pictures of pumps and different color schemes. It is a book I would recommend.

Tokheim announced their pumps by printing a Bulletin. The first mention of the new 850 is Bulletin #260 (First edition 1930). In it it states "Discharge Outlet: Cut 850 is equipped with but one discharge outlet. However, when the pump is placed on an island, gasoline can be delivered to either side. The discharge outlet is located 75 1/2" above the base of the pump."

Bulletin #260 (First edition 1931) for the "Improved" 850 states: Cut 850 ........... The outlet is located 71" above the base of the pump."

Bulletin #260 (Third edition 1932) for the "Improved" 850 states "71".

Bulletin #264 (First editon 1931) for the 850 Square states "working units identical to the 850 round." The picture shows the outlet and hose hanger on each side.

Bulletin #264 (Sixth edition, 1934) states the same but the picture shows the hose hanger and outlet on the same side.

Bulletin #270 (First edition, 1932) states the discharge to be 71" (both round and square).

All the 950 literatue shows the outlet and hose on the same side.

Many changes were made to the 850, see pages 276 and 277 of my book, there was also a change made in the skins and the reset handle of the 850/950 square version.

Copies of all the Bulletins mentioned above is listed on my website at: http://www.petrolianacollectibles.com/tokheim%20pumps.htm

No one has ever done a review of my book, but others have mentioned that would have liked to see more pictures in the ID book. I would too, the publisher limited me to 352 pages (same as the first book), I supplied 2000 pictures, they used 1900. There is also one more problem of showing pictures of restored pumps, who could afford to drive around the United States, just to take pictures of restored pumps? Pictures supplied by most restorers to me when I was writing the book were not suitable for publication, I like to say "You can't tell where the pumps stops and the Texaco sign starts" as collectors usually take pictures in front of everything they own.

One last thing about books for this hobby. I think I will go down in history as the person who wrote the last book that was printed. My opinion is that all future books will be on CDs and if you know enough about desktop publishing you can cut the CDs yourself and eliminate the printer. Or the book could be sold as a download and you just take your computer with you when you go out to seek pumps. The biggest thing the publishers provide is distribution.

Just wanted to give and update on my free gas pump. I had to get rid of the gray. I know none of the colors are correct and the sign is not correct for the age I just had to get rid of the gray. I found a article on the internet on how to paint like the pros by just using spray paint so I tried it.

I used spray cans to paint this pump....one in each hand spraying at the same time.
Krylon has an epoxy paint, it has a real nice shine once it is dry.
I have only used the black, but it looks so much better than the regular spray paint that I stopped using the regular.
It costs more, but the outcome is worth the extra cost.
