First off I like restoring pumps and have little knowledge on original globes. I traded an unrestored pump with an approx value of 350 dollars for this chimney cap globe. It is etched and says guranteed measure under the Imperial decals. I like the look of the decals as well. My question is should I attempt to get the decals off and repaint the lettering or leave it alone. Thanks Steve

I like it as is. How many elements did that decal survive and it still looks like that, its impressive.

...restore the side with the worst decal, or leave it alone...

I vote to get the decal off and make it as original as possible. Maybe not even paint the etching. Of course,YOU are the one that will be looking at it every day, so its most important to do it the way that will please you most!
If you do take the decal off, I'd love to see the original globe!---KEVIN

Squick, does the words "Guaranteed Measure" look like the globe in Jack Sim's first book on page 191? If so, you might want to consider how it would match up with a Guaranteed visible pump. An original Guaranteed globe would be quite rare in my opinion.

Yes the globe is like the one in jacks Book. Good idea but then the pump and globe would have to outside as my Garage isnt tall enough for a visible.

I'm with Gulfiend...leave the coolest looking decal and restore the other side. That way you have the best of both worlds!

I would leave it alone, it's probably unique and once the decal is gone so has a piece of history. maybe put on display and see how you feel in a few months time.

I don't believe original globes belong on pumps outside. Put a repro on them, and display the originals where you can control the enviroment.

You can always replace a repro, but you will probably never be able to replace an original Guarantee Liquid Measure globe.

An I also agree, the Guarantee globe is more impressive than the Imperial decal (my opinion only).

There are very few globes in collections that originally came from the pump factory w/ new pumps & you have one of the earliest. But even the IMPERIAL decal is an early version [note the color of rays around the ETHYL triangle 1924-26].
I would keep as is for while, it can never be returned to as found condition.

I would leave it alone, too. The etched lettering is not going anywhere -- it'll be fine underneath that decal... You don't have the only Guaranteed Measure globe, but you might have the only one with the Imperial decal. That decal is part of the early history of the globe - I'd keep it for sure.

What would really be cool is if you could remove the decal from one side and re-apply it to glass or something to preserve it.This would have to be done piece by piece, any preservationists here?

Your wood floor looks nice also, is that hickory?

Another vote for leave it alone. It looks great the way it is and it is plain to see that it is an original.
However, it's really none of my business........

I guess I have decide to leave it alone for now anyway. I have had a few emails regarding selling the globe so I am giving it some thought as well. If I keep it it will be sitting on top of a clockface pump I have Thanks for the input Steve

...looks like Scott Benjamin is now offering this globe for sale?...from gasglobes.com:

"I am picking up a rare chimney cap Guaranteed Measure globe next week. Globe has early 1920s Imperial decal on it which can be easily removed or left on it. Let me know if you are interested."

It will be interesting to see what the dealer buying this globe will do as in terms of marking it up. I am very surprised no one on this site would step up make a good offer to buy it. It is really a great piece. Personally, I would leave it alone, that way the issue of originality will not come up. Had I known it would be offered for sale, I would have made a good offer, but did not follow this thread that closely.

I am sure there were very many that stepped up and made offers from this site, every time I list something for sale I get about 20 emails or PM's to every 1 response posted on oldgas
