The sign in question.
If it is a fake it is a "good" one!The high bidder must think it is real.

...anyone have a Shell Air sign they KNOW is real?...I'd compare the grommets...the ones on 'the sign in question' look like two-piece grommets...the ones I had on my 1929 Shell 48" sign (that I know was real) were the one-piece design...

Looking for better Gulf items: signs, globes, cans and paper - especially porcelain Gulf flanges, and Gulf A-38 & A-62 ad glass...

There was a guy at the Indy swap meet a month or so ago. Almost all his items were suspect. He had one of these shell air signs as well. Nearly mint with grommets as shown in the photo. Thick heavy porcelain good enough to fool all casual buyers and those that don't follow forums like this. Someone is stepping up hard for a fake and for once it's not me.

Greg' I saw the sign at Indy also. The same guy is set up at the gas engine-tractor show in greenville at the fairgronds this week. He wasn't at his space but the shell air sign and all his other trash was there. ;;;;;;;;;;;Ron

Sign is definately fake, there's no question about that. The easiest way to tell is the corners are squared at the bottom.

Originals will be rounded just like all the other clam shell shaped signs.

In the book "petroleum Collectibles with Prices" by Rick Pease, dated 1997, on page 159 is a photo group of 3 early Shell signs. One of these signs is the Shell "Air" sign. That sign has rounded lower edges, not square as this sign has. I believe that globesandsigns "hit it out of the ballpark" when he noted the corners. Also the design in the "reproduction" is just "off" from the original.

My .2 cents. This is not a real sign. Shell did not make a sign this size. Why are there SOOOOO many of these just now showing up?? Here is a picture of my original AIR sign, the sams size as most pump plates
