I don't know of any reproduction curved porcelain lead signs, and he's correct that if you try and bend the flat ones around the curve of the pump they will crack. What is in the description that could be false? Maybe I missed something...

Yea, I was wondering about the "curved" thing - and if it was true that they made them this way. Thanks for the input.

I have some as well. Just like the curved Sky Chief and Fire Chief signs pumps came with curved contains lead signs. I am surprised you have not seen them on a pump in the wild!

Almost all of the pumps I have found are stripped of signs.
Cool Deal.
Thanks for the input.

Hello all, I knew I had seen info before about this type of signs here on Oldgas, so I did a search and came up with the following.
Gary Drye wrote: "This is taken from a PCM article on the signs. From roughly 1926-1935 the signs were 8" x 7". From 1935 to the '70s the 6" x 7" were used. From 1925-35 these signs were available in flat or curved versions. Also, water transfer decals were used during this time period. An example is given for a Wayne #615 visible and the article suggests the longer sign with the extra writing about "avoid spilling". I have had many of the short Gulf pumps from the early 1960's and everyone of them has the "anti-knock compounds" lettering. So I assume these are later versions."
So my conclusions from reading several of the posts found in my "search", is that the larger signs, flat or curved, would normally be used on visibles, the smaller with "Tetraethyl" was used from 1935 (and if it was curved it would suite a visible) and from 1960, the smaller sign with the wording "anti knock compound" were used.
Hope I didn't mess things up for you... Claes

...I've got original examples of both sizes, flat and curved, with original Ingram-Richardson labels on the back...after reading the wording on those labels (and there's four or five different labels as well), I'm not so sure about the timeline in PCM...if I get a chance I'll shoot and post some pics...
Looking for better Gulf items: signs, globes, cans and paper - especially porcelain Gulf flanges, and Gulf A-38 & A-62 ad glass...

What did they do with signs on the 8 sided pumps where a sign would have to be line bent? Did they just not use the sign or did they use a flat one and just not bend it?
Anyone know?
